He's absolutely worth 5M. The evidence of that is the recent contract signed by Wideman. Puck moving offensive defenseman are worth more in the NHL then stay at home defenseman like Coburn are. It's not about who is the better player. They are different players. It's about the NHL salary structure.
- MJL

Carle is put in the postion to get points hes not an a big threat to score goals. He has no shot and he is one of if not the slowest player on the team. He gives up the puck all the time because he wont go in the corners. If you are on the power play all year long you better have some points or someones going to lose there job.

I would rather start the season with 5-6 in cap space and send out this group

Grossman-Coburn
Timonen-Schenn
Bourdon-Meszaros
Lilja-Gus

Not a bad group

Can't pay Carle 6 mill, Make a big move on Parise or sign Doan with that money and look at adding a dman later in the year when the Pronger money could be used.

That group of 8 is good enough for now.

I love how easy you make it sound. Parise is a pipe dream and Doan wants a 4year over 35 contract.

Carle's rights and Jake for Ryan or I seriously consider a guy like Semin.

- hereticpride

huh?

why is Parise a pipe dream but Semin is not? They are both going to get similar money and I'd much rather have Parise then Semin.

the flyers, needing a top pairing guy, squandered an asset in the JVR trade and came back w/ a #4-5 dman w/ limited puck moving/ offensive skills. in a vacuum, the trade is not a terrible swap, w/ the upside clearly favoring TOR. but in a capped league, there are no vacuums.

fact is, the dominoes are not falling the flyers way here because the need on d going forward is so great and they now have less in the way of assets to address this need. "well, we'll just pay carle what he wants" you say? but what about the cap ramifications? and what about the need for the top pairing guy even if carle IS signed? I'd rather overpay for a guy like suter if our cap is fracked anyway. chances of him coming here...who knows?

b schenn is likely to play wing this yr and I'd rather have traded him to get the right plyr and kept JVR since it is clear over the last two decades, the flyers don't draft/develop their own dmen, so they need to deal from strength to adequately address their weaknesses. it would be a hell of a lot easier to have some top pairing prospects locked into ELCs than to have to go thru this crap for the past 20+ yrs. and since the cap, its even more crucial to do so.

organizationally, the flyers need to make changes to address this area because the ramifications of moves seemingly made in a vacuum have caught up with them too often.

Parise is definitely going to get significantly more than Semin. That said, no interest in Semin.

That's a ridiculous statement to make. Matt Carle is not the slowest player on the team, nor is he one of the slowest.

Really, it would be extremely rare for a defenseman of that quality to be available in a trade at Christmas time.
- MJL

Maybe not Christmas time, but maybe Easter (aka near the trade deadline)... I could live without Carle, playing Gus/Lilja/Bourdon at the 6th spot until the trade deadline... Then pick up a experienced defenseman for the playoffs. We started with a good lineup, but Pronger loss force us played with a weaker defensive group for most of last year. If we don't have Carle, we still have the Schenn and Grossmann upgrades.

2011-12
**Pronger**-Timmo
Coburn-Carle
Mez-Lilja / Bourdon / Gus
*Deadline pick up Grossmann/ Kubina

2010-11
Timmo-Schenn
Coburn-Grossmann
Mez- Bourdon / Gus / Lilja
*Deadline?

Oh and another thing an offensive defenseman who has 3 goals by december 1th (one being in a 9-2 win) and then goes on for the rest of the season having one more goal is not a rare find. When he hits his own teamate in the mouth with a puck in practice and the guy makes a joke about how lucky he was that is was only matt carles shot that hit him kind of makes you think.

im not saying that I wanted to trade Brayden for Luke. I'm willing to trade schenn to get a subban or bogosian.

I agree. If he is really willing to take sub-market price, fine. Pay him around $5 million. I really don't want to over spend for a slightly above average defenseman because they need to fill a roster spot.

Make do for now, sign a serviceable guy. Then have flexibility when you can use the LTIR.

God I can't wait till the season starts. Hockey for me is almost being all year round, like football.

Going to see if any L. Scheen T-sherzees are out yet.

no your right but one is 8 years older and beat up and the other is 10 years older and beat up. who else is slower? I think this would make carle one of the slowest on the team right?

I don't see Subban as a top pairing D Man -- Bogosian yeah, but I wouldn't trade Schenn.

So you make injury excuses for two guys but don't give slack to Carle? Either way, aren't Jagr, Shelley, Timonen, and Nick Grossmann still on the team? 3 out of the 4 are, and guess what--that doesn't make Carle one of the slowest on the team if he's faster than all of them.

EDIT: Make that three guys you make injury excuses for but not Carle. Got it.
