Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Carle's Worth, Prospect Camp
- bmeltzer

Great Blog Bill.

The Enstrom option is a very intriguing one. I'd prefer Weber next year because I ave watched him more and know his game, but I suspect there are 28 other teams in that boat if he leaves Nash.

I am pumped for the 1st to get here to see what shape this team takes.... I expect tweaking and nothing too big. I hope if we lose Carle, we can replace him adequately as I was liking the shape of the D. It's no coincidence that 1 July UFA day is a Holiday here in Canada (Canada day)..

I would rather start the season with 5-6 in cap space and send out this group

Grossman-Coburn
Timonen-Schenn
Bourdon-Meszaros
Lilja-Gus

Not a bad group

Can't pay Carle 6 mill, Make a big move on Parise or sign Doan with that money and look at adding a dman later in the year when the Pronger money could be used.

That group of 8 is good enough for now.

- bhigh21

I love how easy you make it sound. Parise is a pipe dream and Doan wants a 4year over 35 contract.

Carle's rights and Jake for Ryan or I seriously consider a guy like Semin.

Every top team is going to have to make some moves at some point due to Cap issues. That's a fact of life in a Cap world. The Flyers put a quality team on the ice every year.

Not being able to re-sign Carle before July 1, is not an example of poor Cap management.

- MJL

You are bang on.....with one caviot....If they were to pay Carle over 5 mill per, that too me is bad cap management!!! He is just not that good. To me that is when teams get them selves into trouble when they over reach a limit oof what a player should be paid....it ALWAYS comes back to haunt a team. Yes he's got very good vision....he makes the first pass and he makes solid decisions in the offensive zone....but as expressed by Bill.....he has his flaws and honestly the Flyers should explore trade options if and when Carle's asking price turns into a bidding war.

I'm getting worried that the Flyers cant complete a pass on their side of the ice without Carle. Since he is our passing savior, dont you think 6 million is now fair?

I get ur point, but someone is going to give 6mil. I dont think he makes or breaks our cup chances, and id much rather go into next offseason with enough funds to offer a max contract to Weber, but its not crazy that Carle is worth 6 to someone. IF its Detroit are we gonna say they dont know what the heck their doing? I doubt it. With the current D I dont think hes worth 6, 5 is a stretch. Theres other avenues to go to improve team D than signing Carle at a big tag.

If you're not going to sign Carle, then who are you going to get?

I like Bill's suggestion of Enstrom but I highly doubt they make another trade.

Weber is out of the question now, and Suter might not sign in the East (outside of Detroit, geographically speaking).

Really, it would be extremely rare for a defenseman of that quality to be available in a trade at Christmas time.

Says you. I say the Flyers will be able complete a pass even though mjl doesnt think so. So we disagree.
- Daman

Yea, that's what I said, that the Flyers won't be able to complete a pass.

I agree that the Flyers should absolutely have a final offer for Carle and not go above it, if a bidding war ensues. There are limits to what they should pay Carle. I'm comfortable for as much as $5.5M, even though I think that is a slight overpayment. Anything more, and I think I have to look in a different direction.

The red wings have no cap problems year in and year out and are always at the top of the league.

If Carle isn't going to re-sign here, I hope your right. But I have a hard time believing that Murray would take that deal.

What makes Carle better and more valuable then Braydon Coburn?

The Red WIngs have had some of the same problems as the Flyers have. Remember how the Flyers got Ville Leino?

You and everyone else who wants to sign him for over 5mil when coburn is making just over 4mil. Carle is not worth it.

Doesn't answer the question of why the Red Wings had to trade Leino. All top teams at some point will have to make moves due to Cap issues. It's a fact of life.

There are some 5/6 Dmen that could be had for this season. Could focus on filling in the bottom 6 forward position this year. Next year could be huge with Hartnell and Kimmo coming off.

At this point Im sure theres multiple scenarios on their table.

He's absolutely worth 5M. The evidence of that is the recent contract signed by Wideman. Puck moving offensive defenseman are worth more in the NHL then stay at home defenseman like Coburn are. It's not about who is the better player. They are different players. It's about the NHL salary structure.
