He can, but I want someone better. Just my opinion of course.

I feel like my kid is crying about the corvette I just bought him and how I need to get a Ferrari. We have enough points and need to defend the barn better.

All things considered, I don't see it as a priority this year. See what you have in the stable this year. By that I mean give Schenn and Jake a shot at the top line. I doubt it will be disastrous if anything less than appealing. If the latter happens then when Hartnell's contract is up next year go get that shiny new winger. Flyers put up enough points I can't see how Voracek can't replace what Jagr gave ya this past season.
- JoeRussomanno

I think the flyers should always keep an eye out for a possible winger for Giroux. You never know when something becomes available. And I agree it's not a priority, which is why I would have moved it down the list. While I think Voracek could play there, I still think it would be nice to get a guy who's a lock for putting the puck in the net. It's not something to rush to get, but they should be keeping their eyes open.

Just have to support what the Flyers do. We have no control over the situation. Homer gets paid big bucks to figure it out and I'm confident he will.

Either way, we're getting another season of Clode. There's a happy thought!

I'm sick of these ridiculously long deals.
- funmaster18

Didn't say I like it either, but it seems like that is how a team can sign a big-time player and keep the ability to ice a good team. New CBA will look into it I'm sure...

You might already have that guy though. But I'll settle for what you said.

I agree (see my other priorities for that).

However, adding more goals makes your team better too, and Ryan is the type of guy that could score 40-50 on the top line Giroux.

I'm more focused on the skill set of the guy we acquired and I find it inadequate for the cost now and likely, going forward when considering the mix of our d.
- isaiah520

i think its tougher to say something like that going forward..... he's 22 years old

and who knows what the rest of our d will look like in a few years?

Doesn't necessarily make your team better, see Tampa Bay lightning/Pittsburgh Penguins. Hell the Rangers almost made it to the finals scoring 1.5 goals a game.

Some teams don't.

Correct. This will inevitably be part of the negotiations this summer.

I think it was a calculated risk, even for Toronto. There's no guarantee what either player will develop into. The likelihood is there that they both become good players but it's as equally likely they won't.
- JoeRussomanno

Both players are already bona fide NHLers. The question is who will meet thier potential.

It's not about that. It's knowing what your needs are and addressing them in an order you feel is most important an if you can't satisfy your top needs like a number 1 defenseman, then you shoul look for other ways to strengthen your team. The team defense can be better without making any changes on the blue line. The players that are on the team now need to commit to making a better effort. I'm against those trade rumors for Ryan, but if the flyers can add a top winger somehow without losin many assets I'd be very excited for that.

exactly, if JVR hits his and Schenn isn't more than a 5th defender we got screwed and vice versa. However it could be that both hit their potential then both teams made out. There was a substantial amount of risk involved in the trade for both sides.

Personally, I'm a little more confident in JVR hitting his, but I'd be willing to accept some observer bias on that one. I've not watched much of Luke.

You might, but of a guy like Parise decides to come here, you don't tell him not thanks, Voracek might be our guy. That's my only point. They don't need to purse a top winger, but should be keeping their feelers out there for any opportunities to better the team and give Giroux the best possible wingers.

I wasn't trying to insinuate you were in favor, I just the need to comment. Too much can happen over 10 years for me to feel comfortable with that commitment. Quick had a great year but now has a 10 year contract. Will he continue to be great? Probably, but I think thats too much assuming for that many years for any player.

I agree, it was just a poor value deal. if carle is leaving, wouldn't you rather have not made that deal and be willing to move other assets to get a better replacement? we need a puck mover as it is already. I know it's more of a risk, but schenn, while a nice prospect, is not exactly the guy who would make our mix work in the absence of carle.
- isaiah520

It wasn't a poor value deal at all. If Carle is leaving, I'm glad we have another proven NHL defenseman to plug into the lineup. Opportunities could be created for other players.

If neither player had played to expectations so far and have yet to suit up for their new teams, I'm wondering how this can be a bad deal already?

this opinion is the one I've heard from a GM type and read about from a scout. it also seems to be the prevailing opinion of most NHL commentators ive heard/read. I certainly don't expect him to provide much in the way of offence.
- isaiah520

Schenn is a player that can give you around 25 points from the back end. That's nothing to sneeze at.
