Slim. But that's basically everyone's chances since there are reportedly 7-8 teams in the running.

Wait till Homer makes a move July 1st that people hate. Can't wait for this board to light up with negativity.

If the Pens got Parise, I could see him panicking. I probably would too.

It's just one move no need to panic.

As it stands, Schenn for JvR was a very pragmatic hockey deal that addressed future needs for both teams. Unless you have a crystal ball, it's impossible to tell who got the better end of it today. Either player could either blossom or disappoint from the change in scenery -- and in JvR's case, health could be the big equalizer when all is said and done.

With respect to Carle, if the Flyers had the foresight to preserve enough tagging space to get a deal worked out for Carle well in advance of July 1, I'm sure they could have had him sewn up for the reported $4.25-4.75M/per. The Schenn trade had very little impact on Carle's future, especially considering that they actually gained some additional tagging space in that deal.

- Tomahawk

I'm really saying that the flyers could have aimed higher to get a higher level dman. they also could have waited until after July 1 to see if the landscape shifted more to their favor than bring in a guy like schenn, who right now looks like a mistake prone version of grossmanN, w/ better puck skills, at this point

If they signed Salo for 1 yr/$3 million, then they'd get $9 million off the books next summer to go after Weber/Enstrom.

That option is intriguing should Carle walk.

True, but because that is so, do you really pay this guy nearly 6MM or more? I just can't justify it. Kimmo is making 6.3MM, Coby 4.25MM, Meszy 4.0MM. As you said, as the years go up so do salaries, but this also has to do with the fact that there are barely any top 4 defensemen on the market. I don't feel that Carle is worth the same as Kimmo (in his prime when contract was signed) and he's not nearly or more than 2MM better than Coburn and Meszaros. You have to let him walk.
- Flyers1218

I personally would not sign him for more than $5.5, and even that would be uncomfortable (I was really hoping for this hometown discount thing to go through). It's just what the market says what he's worth. Part of the big blueline payroll (and the Luke Schenn trade, in my opinion) is that Timonen won't be ready for the start of the season.

As for what Carle could get versus what Timonen signed for, the salaries aren't comparable. Timonen in his prime would make significantly more on the market today than he did back then.

If I may also say, this isn't to say I'm happy to get big cap hits on these guys, it's just the harsh reality of the business.

Just have to support what the Flyers do. We have no control over the situation. Homer gets paid big bucks to figure it out and I'm confident he will.

how do you know there were other (better) options out there? and sometimes deals aren't made simply to fill an immediate need. particularly when talking about 22 year olds

it's very possible that homer traded jvr for schenn because he feels that move helps the flyers moving forward, despite the fact that schenn might not be the best fit as a carle replacement this season

- FlyerMike18

I'm more focused on the skill set of the guy we acquired and I find it inadequate for the cost now and likely, going forward when considering the mix of our d.

All things considered, I don't see it as a priority this year. See what you have in the stable this year. By that I mean give Schenn and Jake a shot at the top line. I doubt it will be disastrous if anything less than appealing. If the latter happens then when Hartnell's contract is up next year go get that shiny new winger. Flyers put up enough points I can't see how Voracek can't replace what Jagr gave ya this past season.

It is a big move but it shouldn't change what the Flyers are trying to do bc I don't think they can add Parise anyways.
