Even if the Flyers let Carle and Jagr walk, re-sign Voracek ($3.0 M estimate), re-sign Bourdon ($900K estimate) and a backup goalie ($800,000), plan to waive Shelley ($1.1M) and can find a taker for Lilja ($737,500, over-35 contract) via minor trade, they will have $7.914M of cap space.
Sign Parise at $7.9 M and there's a mere $140,000 of cap space plus Pronger's LTIR to get through the entire season. And that's with carrying the absolute minimum (6 D, 12 forward) number of skaters.
Niitty is meeting with doctors this summer. He might have to take a year off or retire because of the chronic hip problems, according to a report in Finland last month.

Well they won't be signing Parise, or Suter. Not going to extend Crosby at 100 million than turn around and give Suter or Parise 50 million.

Yup, most likely. Penguins were on the verge of going bankrupt not long ago, and now this. Unreal. A franchise player like Crosby, and a new building will do that.
Why couldn't the Flyers have had their season from hell in 04-05?

I agree, the hype is utterly ridiculous.
I love Bobby Ryan......grew up with his cousin and even attended my first game asa 10 year old with his cousin and grandfather so I have always followed him. but that said I am not about to overpay if it were my decision. I would not move the rumored Voracek, dman and a first for him. Just wouldn't do it. - nastyflyergirl
If Carle's cap hit is going to be over $5 mil, I think the team would have to look at going a different direction. If they plan on trading for Bobby Ryan, then I think its imperative they sign Carle but assuming they don't make the trade, what if the Flyers did this:
Cap space: $11,481,000 mil
1) Re-sign Voracek at an estimated $3.0 mil- (Space left: 8,481,000)
2) Sign a backup goalie like Clemmensen at approx 900k (space left: 7,381,000)
3) Re-sign Sesito at $650l- (Space left $6,731,000)
4) Sign Ray Whitney or Jagr for $3,0 mil- (Space left $3,731,000)
5) Sign one of these defenseman:
O'Brien, Colaiacovo, Hannan, Sarich, or Kuba to fill 6th defensemen (none more than $2.75 mil- (Space left- $980k)
6) Trade MAB- he can't be sent down and shouldn't just sit in the press box- maybe get a 3rd round pick)
They can waive Shelley and have approximately $2.080 cap space, before waiving Bartulius and Walker. Add Pronger on LTIR- they would gain some more space to make an in-season move- approximately $4.5mil)

Any sane or knowledgeable fan would. There are also those who would get together in a garage and play the Spin Doctors greatest hits if they signed Shelley to a 4 yr extension.

2005 -- This was the most unique Draft Drawing. Because the 2004-05 NHL season was cancelled, there was not a final standings to determine the Entry Draft order. Therefore, the Draft Drawing held on July 22 included all 30 teams and a special weighted system. Teams were assigned one to three lottery balls based on their playoff appearances from 2001-02 through 2003-04 and first overall draft picks from the drafts of 2001 through 2004. Four clubs had the greatest chance of receiving the first overall selection (6.3 percent) -- the Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Ten teams had two lottery balls (4.2 percent chance), and 16 were given one ball (2.1 percent).
