Flyers have about $11.2 million. Call carle $5 and Voracek $3 and a backup goalie $ .8. So you have about $2.4 million to replace JVR and Jagr. You'd have Shelly in the top 4 lines with zero depth. It can be done, but one injury on the top 3 lines and there's nothing to replace it. Shelly, Rinaldo or Talbot on the top 3 lines would be a disaster.

No they'd have more then that. Plenty of space to make those moves. Did you read the blog for this thread? And why would Talbot on a 3rd line be a disaster?

What do you think the reason for that was? And he missed 41 games with a concussion last year. And we should sign him to play with Briere?

Have you SEEN what other d-men have been paid since the last lockout? Jeff Finger got a gross overpayment. Bouwmeester did too. Now, Wideman. Carle got less than them and is better than them. He blocks shots, usually with his stick a la Desjardins, he makes the first pass out of the zone better than many d-men, he can skate it out of the zone well, and he gets back to cover. He's comparable to Kim Johnsson who never got unbridled hate like Carle.

As for your last sentence, were you not around for players that polarized the fanbase like Ron Hextall (second stint), Eric Lindros, or Jeff Carter?

- Flyskippy

Two wrongs don't make a right (referring to overpayment of dmen) and yes I was around. May have been a bit of an exaggeration. I don't hate Carle, I'd rather let carle get his 6 from Det or whomever it may be and save some of that money for next years solid D free agent crop

Those 19 goals would be better served coming from the 4th line?

Meh. They'll have money to spend on next season's UFA crop from Timonen's contract ending.

Exactly, why would you want a two way player like Talbot on your 3rd line. Complete disaster.

F Carle. In this crazy game of chess, lets think two steps ahead. Weber will be miserable when Suter leaves and he realizes he is in a hick town. No way he signs an extension.

Flyers, with enough cap space at the trade deadline, pull the trigger. With Timmo retiring, no sweat long term.

We have 5 very good d-men. Dont overpay Carle. Think ahead.

Yes I read the blog. They would not have more money than that unless you're already using the pre-season allowance and/or LTIR. That IMO would be a big mistake this early. Just see the Phils and they don't have a hard cap. You need $$$ at the deadline to fill holes as they pop-up during th season.

True, but I am kinda thinking long term here. Timo and Hartsy are up, but the team is so young, and players like G, Coots, Schenn, Simmonds etc. all will need raises. Hartnell probably takes a little less but then Giroux will get about a 3 mil raise.

+1. 5 solid Dmen and a solid 6th Dman in Bourdon with Gustavson and Manning in the AHL and Lilja as the 7th. Only way I'd sign Carle at this point if they had the equivelent of a sign and trade with one of the other top 5 going for a young winger or picks.

For the short term, they need a puck moving, minute-eating defenseman. Carle fits that description perfectly, with the skills I mentioned above.

As for long term, I trust Homer to keep this team competitive, for one, and to consistently try to build a Cup-winner.

Good, I'm expanding your vocabulary.

Reading will do that - even online.

But it's actually to disparage or attack the character of something.

Am I thinking two steps ahead when I ask who are we going to trade to get Weber at the deadline?

Wouldn't it make more sense to sign Carle now and then deal one of Carle, Mez, Grossmann, Schenn, or Coburn as part of that trade?

Gotta say I trust Homer too. If he can do what he did last year and stay competitive I believe in him. I would just feel way more comfortable saving money for G, coots, and Schenn. I want those three here for the rest of their careers
