Doan's career shootout record

2011-12: 2 for 7
2010-11: 1 for 3
2009-10: 2 for 9
2008-09: 2 for 4
2007-08: 1 for 4
2006-07: 2 for 3
2005-06: 1 for 3
CAREER 11 for 33, 33.3 percent

Not bad at all.

My apologies, I sure remember some big shoot goals but obviously he is not a Slava Kozlov type of shoot out wiz. Anyway I would love to see him in a flyer uniform. Thanks for correcting me on the shoot outs but that does not change my respect and admiration for Doaner. If you insist then let the Pens get him and you will be wishing he was a flyer, as Don Cherry would say "Beauty"

Couldn't that be minimized by a buyout though?
- JoeRussomanno

Yes, but then you're still carrying dead cap space for twice the remaining length of the contract. Better off with an LTIR arrangement if it comes to that, IMO.

Any truth to Briere and Doan being close friends?

okay I gotcha. I just would feel more comfortable in acquiring Doan via free agency than making some of these blockbuster trades I've been reading. Not saying hell and high water go after him.

33.3 percent isn't a bad career conversion percentage. I'd even be comfortable with him as one of the three regulars along with Giroux and Briere (despite Danny not having a good year in that department last season).

Don't get me wrong. I'd be very happy to land Doan if I were Paul Holmgren but the four-year demand makes me leery.

Still don't want to tie in to an over-35 contract that will take him to age 40. Not saying he can't still be an effective player for the duration but all it takes is a freak injury that is beyond the scope of conditioning -- or more commonly, something like accumulated back, knee or shoulder injuries that he played through -- to turn the contract into an albatross.
- bmeltzer

Those type of injuries can happen to any player whether he is 20 or 35. Doan has been a stud his whole career and their in no reason to believe he is due. This guy is like a Gordie Howe physically. If you foul him he will take your number and serioulsy get even just like Howe did without even drawing a penaly.

Maybe if they could find a way to lower the cap hit by giving him most of the salary for the first two years?

I know they'd still be stuck if something happens but it might make it a little less risky.

anyone else kinda offended by this? It's one thing to be making an obscenely huge amount of money, but to make it 8.7 just for giggles, rubs me the wrong way.

It takes that to get you offended? What about the fact that he is a d--k?

Very true, but if they happen on an over-35 contract, you are stuck with the cap hit or, more likely, a multi-year LTIR hassle, ala Pronger, Lappy and Hatcher.

I would look at a two year deal and Doan wants four, so lets meet in the middle at three years. You think Doan accepts a deal for less than his current cap hit?

The difference is that is he retired due to injury up to age 34 the contract goes off the cap. Doan's contract stays on, and LTIR is not a real good way to do business.

I would take the guy in a heartbeat at the right price. But 2 years max. There are too many risks signing an over 35 long term, I don't care who the player is. The Pronger lesson should be burned in to our collective minds.

Don't know the particulars of friendship with Doan, but I will say there are very few former teammates with whom Briere does not get along well. He's just a first-class, quality person. Doan has always been regarded in same light, too.
- bmeltzer

Briere - dont know him but he gives the impression of a quality person.

Like how the Doan-a-mania is catching on. Hopefully he ses value with the Flyers. I would love to see Harts and Doan as bookends to G. One can talk trash, and the other can back it up.

Final word on Doan for now. If he would trade off some frontloaded salary structure for a longer-term deal (say, $4.5M, $4.0M, $3.25M), I'd be willing to see the Flyers risk a three-year deal. Not sure I'd want a four-year deal under almost any circumstances.

Any chance the new CBA does away with these 35+ contracts meaning the players still get paid their money but come off the cap?

I've been critical of Briere, but never as a person. He definitely reeks of class.

I just started watching 24/7 this week... I know right?

Anyway, I can't believe how much Briere's kids look like him.

I could see them revisiting it to add some sort of common sense provisions to it.

It has to be easy enough to distinguish between signing an over 35 year old to a ten year contract he has no intention of fulfilling to avoid an excessive cap hit, and having an over 35 year old suffer a career ending injury like Pronger that could happen to a player AT ANY AGE.

We are not talking about chronic back or knee problems. I'm talking about concussions, eye injuries, etc. Injuries that are catastrophic but not age related.

There has to be an easy way. I understand the reasoning behind the over 35 rule, but now that it has been in practice for a while, it should be able to be tweaked to reflect the reality of the game. I can see both owners and players agreeing quite easily to a framework for this provision.

What I DON'T see the players agreeing to, is limiting the length of contracts an over 35 player can sign.
