I love shane doan but seeing him in any new uniform will be very Joe Montana like - hubie
Montana was an NFL icon. Despite Doan's accomplishments, cant compare. |

Really? While I appreciate the game Leopold plays for us, I just love Regehr's nasty streak. He's our only defenseman who regularly hits guys, especially in the dirty areas. At the end of the season he was playing too large a role with Myers and Ehrhoff out, but he doesn't need to hopefully. I want my guys with letters to be the guys who stick up for their teammates first. Knowwhatimsayin? |

If someone is a natural leader people naturally get behind them and follow. If Doan were to come to the Sabres I'm sure people would follow him more naturally then you would follow Pomminville, and if that is the case then Doan should wear the C. If not then keep it on Pommer for the time being. - Rally_Shots
I did some digging, thinking that I wouldn't find too many examples of players giving up their captaincy for another player. Of the 28 current NHL captains, 22 of them were named captain to fill a vacancy (from a trade, retirement, UFA leaving, etc.)
The 6 who didn't fill a vacancy are:
-Conroy moved out of the way for Iginla.
-Brind'Amour stepped down (it looked forced/staged) for Staal.
-Modano stepped down for Morrow.
-Koivu was part of a rotating captaincy. What a f'n nightmare those are. Eventually he was named permanent captain.
-Luongo couldn't focus in the playoffs so he stepped down. It was between Sedin and Kesler to replace him. He didn't step down to make way for Sedin.
-Clark stepped down for Ovechkin.
In the 4 cases where someone gave up their captaincy for another player, it was for their heir apparent. We aren't getting Doan, so all of this is moot, but if we did, he would not be captain. Alternate - sure. |

I agree with you but to play devils advocate, you forgot Rivet coming to Buffalo. He got the C upon arrival. |

Clearly stated that I looked at the 28 current captains.
Rivet wouldn't have been included anyway because no one took the C off for him. It had been vacant or rotating since Stu left.
Also he wasn't given the C upon arrival. 3 months after we got him the players voted him captain. It was a joke from the start. |

Sorry, that's $5.25M per year for Wideman, not $5.2. |

Pominville was the captain, but not full time. It was just his turn. I don't miss that rotating C garbage at all. |
