It will always hang over him but he did play in a pretty rough Flyers series and was in the epicenter for much of it and came out fine. Seeing the spine specialist was very beneficial to him as they caught some variables that were causing "concussions like symptoms". Time will tell, but all 30 teams are offering him that deal.
- Gunner Staal

no doubt about that... I am just curious if they are gonna give the same kind of deal to Malkin.

But would he take it? Imagine the bidding war if he hits the open market.

I still wonder what the hell took them so long to go that route. There were already documented cases of this in the NHL (Tim Connolly and Antoinne Vermette). You would think teams would explore this option sooner instead of waiting for months. Perhaps there's some medical reason for not doing so, but it seems common sense to me to weigh all the options sooner rather than later.

Breaking #NHL news. Done deal. Look for #Pens to announce star Sidney Crosby to a new 12 year contract for 104.4M. Annual cap hit 8.7M

No raise for Crosby.

- Gunner Staal

That deal has got to be frontloaded as all get-out.

Now that Jordan Staal is out of the picture, I'm guessing the Penguins would be willing and able to match any offer Malkin receives on the open market. I'm guessing Crosby's deal was tailored with that in mind.

holy smokes.

i'm surprised he didn't take a raise for the players association's sake. it's crazy to think salaries for players were up to 10-14million 12ish years ago (bure making 14 at one point). this makes wideman's deal look 10x worse then reddens' deal. ouch. good for Sid.

there is no way he gets to the open market... Malkin has 2 years left on his deal.. Crosby only had this next year..

That was my first thought too, but I don't think they can scoff at a 10+ year contract. Or a $100+ mil deal.

Throw another MVP season in between now and then. Factor in the cap going up, most likely. Also, can you see the Pens making someone besides Sid the highest player on their team? Maybe if he signs a 1 year mercenary type deal. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Malkin tested the waters. He could always resign with the Penguins after seeing what else is out there.

Agreed...I'm just saying that if, for some inexplicable reason, it got to that point, the Penguins would still be in okay shape.

I think Crosby will end up just fine in the long run

When I heard about his visits to the spine specialists, I immediately figured it was the same issue that the Sabres misdiagnosed Tim Connolly with when he missed all of 06-07 with "lingering" concussion issues. That just turned out to be caused mainly by his neck

The only reason they even figured out what was causing Connolly's issue was because Lydman started having migraines that season. They figured out that they were caused by a neck issue and then decided to see if the same was going on with Connolly. Funny how things work that way sometimes.

Antoinne Vermette had the same issues. You would think that would be the first place teams and doctors would look after even a month of no improvement in symptoms.

The + = Pysyk or a 2nd.

Also hearing the Flyers are interested in Finley to replace Pronger on the blue line.

It's funny that people are still "breaking" the Crosby news, but the Pens have it up on their website.
