I agree, they should 2 or 3 of J-Bo, Iggy, Kipper, Cammy and get back some young assets and then go into free agency looking to sign some impact players and maybe make a trade for a good young player available or a veteran that could be had cheap. This way, they improve their prospect depth and still have a shot to be competitive for a playoff spot. Similar to what Dale Tallon did with Florida and what Holmgren did in Philly. - Nucker101
considering how shallow the UFA market is now, what it will be in 2013 and what the 2013 draft looks like. They should wait for trade deadline.
2013 is a great year to rebuild. A strong draft, and a lot of huge names going UFA. It's worth the wait.
They made gambles that could pay off this year with wideman and cervenka. Maybe there's another trading coming.
Way its timed out now they and with their 1st pick. They are stocking up for things in a couple years. Sure its not as exciting as the Edmonton suck arse and win a lotto strategy, but its more of a Detroit strategy that will make a solid club.
2-3 yrs Edmonton will be struggling to resign all their lotto boys.
This year is going to be rough. I'm not expecting much unless one more big trade is in the works or if Cervenka surprises hugely. Trade deadline will be huge this year as its all up to Iggy and Kipper. |

Blake Price said that Garrison will sign with Fla 5 year /6.5 mil per
Parise and Suter will get 7.5 - VANTEL
All the Team 1040's hosts are clueless and have zero sources, it amazes me how little they know about other players outside of Vancouver at times. What a joke! |

If Garrison gets 6.5, Brian Campbells contract will start looking reasonable. |

Anybody half decent you are going to major overpay for this summer. I would maybe try a big one yr del for Whitney. I think my original line up is as good or better then last yr and we are in extremely good shape for the following yr. - Bieksa#3
Several of the new guys in your roster haven't played an NHL game. It's tough to predict how impressive they will be. Also, where is the depth going to come from? More rookies? Any vet will be subject to waivers.
I know people love the youth movement idea, but we just won 2 President's Trophies and went to the finals with a team of vets. Turning it over with gusto isn't a proven method for anyone. |

I don't see it as a Detroit strategy, just looking at Detroit's roster, they don't have many overpaid players at all and get good value for the money that they spend. Feaster signing an unknown in Cervenka and paying him a good amount and overpaying for Wideman doesn't follow that at all. The team as it is right now, lacks an identity and direction as an organization. Those types of teams are not usually successful. If you're a veteran team and the goal is to barely get into the playoffs and the expectation is just to be in the hunt then you have some serious problems. I'm not suggesting completely tanking like the Oilers(It must get boring as a hardcore fan to lose so may games over the last few years and only getting excited and looking forward during the draft).
I'd suggest trading 2 or 3 of the higher paid veterans for young players/picks(Kipper and Iggy would bring back the biggest returns). As you said, next year's draft is a great year to accumulate and stockpile draft picks and get a couple of very good prospects. And with the freed up cap space, the Flames could offer some big money to the top UFA's out there as well.
Not really a re-build, more of a re-tooling and a major shakeup.

So Rome should be able to get 3.5/yr on the open market? |

I agree. I don't mind giving a roster spot to a prospect that's really impressed in camp/pre-season but not signing some solid veteran players who are expected to be in the lineup and compete with the younger guys in camp would be a huge mistake. We're in no position to be going into camp expecting a prospect or 2 to win a starting job, outside of maybe Schroeder for the temporary 2C spot. If Gaunce, Jensen, Mallet, Connauton, etc make the team it would be very surprising. |

Burke will proclaim that Rome was the one guy they targeted at free agency that they really wanted..... |

I hope not. They would be scary good with him and it would eliminate the need for Luongo. |

I told you he wanted a lot. No chance he is signing in Vancouver. |

I may be in the minority, but I actually liked Rome. He was a lot better over the last year and a half. For his price, I like what he brings. Without him getting suspended in the finals, I think we would have won. Having him out was the straw that broke the camels back.
If we've got someone better coming up, great. But at this point at least, I think Rome is a better all around player than Tanev. - micah555
I really liked Rome too. But I thought the finals were a disaster cause of scoring, not D...though the D did stink it up in a couple of games for sure... |

Anyone think Samuellson would come back for a one year deal? I really liked his play and his flexibility on lines 1-3 was great... |

He's 35 and turns 36 this year, but that being said I did like him as a player and he did have good flexibility and was useful on the PP. I wouldn't mind him back on a one year deal at around the same cap hit as his original deal(2.5). |

Agreed. Suter is expected to sign for around 6.5-7 mil so that would make no sense. |

Very solid player. If we miss out on some big names in free agency I would offer him a very reasonable contract for 1 year for 2 mil. This would only be as a last resort. |

Injuries? - Fidel
He was battling injuries all year long during the 2011/2011 season but was healthy for the most part(he did miss a few games, but wasn't playing as hurt as he was here) in Florida this year and put up very good numbers. He's solid in the playoffs as well. |

Not interested. Might as well try your hand at Doan. Maybe Doan can help Kassian out. I also believe that Gillis is itching to get younger.... |

If you were Samuellson would you want to go back to a team that traded you when you can choose any team?
I'm not saying there is no spot for him, I just don't think he would come here. |

Who doesn't want to get younger?
The one thing I love about high school girls is the older I get, they stay the same age. |
