Kubina was also in the role Luke Schenn takes over.

Can Talbot score 19 again? Can Hartnell score 37 again? For those players who were up, there are others who could come down. In my opinion it would be nice to have a 30 goal guarantee.

Not talking about last year. Talking about this year. Kubina is not likely to return.

Talbot may not score 19 again. That was an exceptional goal total for him. But he's not really here for goals. I see no reason why barring any injuries, that Hartnell playing with Giroux can't pot 35 again. And I expect far more from Briere, and also an upgrade in goals from Brayden Schenn.
I'd love to have a top goal scorer to play on the other side of Giroux. And maybe that's coming. But we have enough offense, even if it doesn't happen. And a very good team. Improve defensively, get better goaltending, and this team is vastly improved just by that. And good defense leads to offense.

We've had the most expensive defense probably the past 2-3 years with a Chris Pronger and we've still only been average at best.

Doesn't mean they can't be improved defensively this year. And Schenn can help there. I don't expect the Flyers to be as good as LA or NY defensively. But with the talent up front, improve team defense and goaltending. And they're right there. Even without any further moves.

I agree and schenn right now is not as good as kubina in most phases of the game. I feel confident that he will improve, but he's a third pairing guy right now. I also would not count on some of our forwards having the career yrs they had. to do so would be folly.

Isn't it also true that other players will have improved years? Or is that not possible. How many teams have a defenseman as good as Luke Schenn on the 3rd pair. Kubina looked done last year.

I'd prefer a longer term solution. I'd also rather sign some solid two way forwards that bring a physical game, and can chip in some offense over Jagr. But I would not be upset if he comes back. He was a positive overall for this team last year.

If Pronger never really improved us, how does Schenn improve us when he needs to improve himself?

what does Pronger have to do with Schenn other than the Flyers are trying to make their d-corps as deep as possible to alleviate Pronger's absence?

Pronger never improved the Flyers?

Schenn improves the Flyers defensively because he is better then Gustafsson, Bourdon, and Lilja.

when that many guys have career yrs & then you subtract 30 goals from the lineup on top of that, it's not a good equation. we need another guy.

kubina did look done, but schenn looked wretched at times last yr and he has a long way to go to recover from being rushed in TOR.

I don't know. He's like the anti-lidstrom though. Owns lots of sexy defensive Dman numbers, needs lots of refinement and to improve the subtleties of the game

There's no problem with the equation. Briere only had 16 goals, and Schenn had 12 in 54 games. And you act like a young player having a career year is an anomaly and can't be repeated. Schenn is a 22 year old defenseman. It is quite common for a player his age to have ups and downs. Especially for a defenseman. And he has shown in the past that he can play at a high level in the NHL.

It would be nice to get another guy. it would certainly make the Flyers a better offensive team having a goal scorer to play on the other side of Giroux. But they have enough offense without it.

I don't know who was working with Schenn in Toronto but the proposition of him being tutored over the summer by someone like Hatcher is making me thing positive thoughts. Not saying he's gonna bring home a norris trophy but I think the change of scenery (this goes for JVR too) will do him some good, maybe.

To be as good anyone. There isn't a team in the League that has more offense from the Forwards, then the Flyers do. Even more so if they make another move.

How the Flyers play defensively, and how good the goaltending is, is likely to be a far bigger factor in how far the Flyers can go, then offense is.
