a lot of teams will offer him more and rumor has it, he wants to be Canada.
- flyersfan51

ESPN had the flyers as the top team for him, of course that was ESPN?

Every team can only offer him the exact same amount if I am reading the rules correctly.

Again, why would Schultz sign with the Flyers when EVERY single team will be offering the EXACT same amount?
- MBFlyerfan

Exactly.

So it comes down to location and prospects of winning.

And cheesesteaks.

I thought MAB was fine and so was Lilja -- not a lot of teams have top 6 Defensemen. most have top four -- as it stands with Carle we have a solid 8 in my opinion.
- flyersfan51

I do agree, most teams you look at go with a top 4 with heavy minutes (especially with a $60 million goalie). But we seem to have uncertainty going into the season assembling a top 4 that can handle the minutes that we can say we're sure on

Kimmo back surgery
Mez is his back fully healed?
Grossman he had the knee & concussion but we haven't heard anything negative
Schenn he may not be ready to assume a top 4 role yet, as like the one for one for jvr he is still developing his game

The Isles by far, imho.

Not a whole lot has been made about it (that I've seen) so I'm still not convinced it actually happened.

- Scoob

They showed on yahoo NHL the amount of picks the Jackets would have had in addition there own had they bit on that offer, is was staggering!
They pretty much would have stayed on stage behind Bettman all day

the issue is the flyers inability to develop their own guys resulting in the cap committement that they have to make. hard to sustain...
- isaiah520

It's an issue, but not a major one imo. They've got Bourdon and Gustafsson who are NHL-ready. Manning and Lauridsen are not far behind. Not likely to be a top-4 guy in the bunch, but you have these guys so you don't have to pay $3.5 million to a 3rd pairing defenseman or for depth/injury fill-in purposes.

I would agree that I'd like to see the Flyers develop a defenseman. But the Flyers put a quality defense on the ice every year, and a quality team. So it doesn't seem as though it is hard to sustain. The Flyers have 2 young defenseman who will have low Cap hits that they can play if they choose to. So they can, if they choose to, trade a higher Cap hit player to play one of those 2 players.
But everyone wants the Flyers to be better defensively. One way to do it is to have the veteran depth they currently have, if they re-sign Carle.

Put Gustafsson in there. The point remains the same.

we were discussing this yesterday -- 7.1 for the third d pairing is way too expensive. I really think Gus can be a full time Defensemen and contribute to our team this year.....Let Carle walk and sign Parise and if needed, a 7/8 defensemen.
- flyersfan51

Gustafsson isn't going to replace what Carle brings. If I have to choose, I'd re-sign Carle.

I don't want Schultz. Great potential but he's already showed his maturity in how he's treating this Anaheim situation. The guy hasn't played a day in the NHL and already he is dictating where he wants to go. He's earned nothing.

If not for the fact that we'd have to carry 8 defensemen than I'd be totally cool with having the D corp they have now. But I think it makes the most sense to move Mez.

Carle really doesn't get enough credit, 25 minutes a game in the playoff last season, as well as his durability.

The rules have made him a Free Agent. Giving him the right to choose where he wants to play.

He used a CBA loophole he just never committed his real interest to the Ducks, but they messed up and should have moved him after seeing he wouldn't commit

I did see that (along with the "younger Wangs) at he table

Who's more of a goof? The islanders for offering that package, or Columbus for not taking all the picks?

- puckhead17

Well to me having him and his family at the draft table is idiocy. I didn't see Ed there for the Flyers. It just shows you to what level he seems to be involved and that can be a bad thing.

I am shocked that Howson has a job. Between the Carter disaster, seemingly overvaluing Nash and maybe Bob and then the optics of firing your scouts etc right after the draft? It smacks of a clown show. As a fan I'd be saying to myself, so you as the GM just allowed your scouting staff which you clearly had no faith in to make picks in the draft that just ended 2 days ago??? Dear lord. Great to say you want to go in another direction, but set the course before the draft!
