True, still doesn't mean things will work out. It's a choice, if I can in most years I'll stick with the pick. That's not to say if a deal comes along I think would be good to make that I wouldn't make it.
But for 2013 & 2014 I'd do my best to keep my picks and if it's possible add to them. - ob18
Interesting. So if the Flyers sign Parise and trade Mez lets say for some picks next year would you be okay with that move? Odds of this happening are slim but just throwing out an example. |

Not sure I'd be okay with it but I may not be as upset as others. |

Thanks.
If MacKinnon approaches the levels people have been saying he can (Crosby Jr.) I think they'll be testing the drinking water in Cole Harbor, N.S. |

One I'm interested in as well may not have a high grade right now but I liked when I saw him last year was Ryan Hutchison (D) of the Kingston Frontenacs who should also have a good shot and making the USA roster for the WJC. |

That's mainly why he is compared to Crosby because the are from the same town. |

He's put up some pretty ridiculous numbers himself along the way, his size would scare me though. I guess the same was said about Crosby back in the day so who knows.
The rankings can and will change so much between now and next June, it will be interesting to watch. |

Yep. You can certainly attest to that by using Angelo Esposito as an example.
Early in his draft year, he was projected to go first overall by some scouts but dropped to 20th into your laps. Thereafter, into hockey obscurity. |

Great example. Went from proJected #1, got cut from Team Canada Jr team, I think we drafted him at 29 or something overall. Then he was a throw in in the Hossa trade and he's made it all the way to not receiving a QO from Dallas this year. Probably never play a game in the NHL. |

He was selected 20th overall but your Penguins in 2007. Was pushed at 1 point to the ECHL last season. |

I can't believe there were only 7, as i remember that wasn't a very good draft. That was the year you took JRV? Think it's also the year we took Vellieux, some are still hoping he pans out...

Angelo was voted rookie of the year in 2005-6 in the Q, second overall in rookie points behind some guy named Giroux. |

Seen a few folks concerned about the amount of salary that the Flyers will be devoting to the defense if we keep all the d-men we have now. Some have even listed it among the reasons they want to see one of the d-man traded in the deal for Ryan or someone else.
So I thought it would be interesting to see what some other teams spent on their top six defensemen last season, and compare it to what the Flyers would have to spend next year if they kept everyone.
I didn't look at every team. I chose playoff teams that I felt had good defenses, or were described as such by the pundits. I used last seasons numbers, obtained from Capgeek, and took the six highest paid defensemen on the roster for each team. In cases where there were more than six top dollar d-men, I took the six that played the most games.
One flaw in this exercise is that it compares next season for the Flyers to last season for the other teams. So the other team's numbers could theoretically increase once they acquire/trade/re-sign players. I thought about trying to estimate this year's D cap hits for the other teams, but that involved too much guessing about who was going to wind up where, so I just used last year's numbers.
Not a perfect system, but it should give us a rough idea if we are going to be just crazy out of whack with the rest of the league next year.
Here are the numbers, in no particular order:
LA: $21,944,643
Detroit: $22,200,000
Chicago: $22,205,128
Vancouver: $19,775,000
Boston: $17,116,667
Nashville: $17,390,000
EDIT: Corrected two numbers in the Philly total. New total cap hit is $26,683,333.
The Flyers cap hit for their top 6 will be $23,820,833 next season if nobody is moved (obvs this doesn't count Pronger's salary). So it does seem like Philly would be at or near the top of the scale next year. But to me it doesn't seem absurdly high, or completely off the charts. If they don't move anyone, they will be paying more for their D than just about anyone else. But if some of those other teams wind up with a big free agent or two, they could be paying as much or more than the Flyers when it's all said and done.
Still doesn't seem all that bad to me, but it is high, no question. For me, not high enough that we should feel like we absolutely must trade a d-man in any deal we make just to reduce the amount of cap allocated to the defense. And I think you could make a strong case that our third pair is better than the third pair on any of these other teams. So it's not like we're not getting value for the money.
Thoughts? |

My thoughts are way to bring the facts!
And I agree. And the Cap amount they have invested in the defense, is not a legitimate reason for trading a defenseman. That is just totally illogical. |
