with the exception of the first say 10 picks, more often than not, even first round picks are a gamble no matter what the scouts say
scouts are wrong a lot more often than they are right....

Are you mad that they didn't stay at 14 and take a center who, while it does not look like he is a number one, could be a leader and a nasty, big center with skill who is very difficult to play against? - kingcong39
Well that all depends on how the 2nd rounder turns out. He's supposed to be the best open ice hitter in the whole draft but I've always viewed the draft as a crap shoot so I value quantity. |

Well really what kind of impact does the average pick at the 21 spot have at the NHL level? Let's have a look
1996 Marco Sturm
1997 Mika Noronen
1998 Mathieu Biron
1999 Nick Boynton
2000 Anton Volchenkov
2001 Colby Armstrong
2002 Anton Babchuck
2003 Mark Stuart
2004 Wojtek Wolski
2005 Tuukka Rask
2006 Bob Sanguinetti
2007 Riley Nash
So for the most part these are not high impact NHLers quite a few of them are not NHLers at all and most of the ones that are offer services that are easily replaceable through UFAs. So really I'm not that mad at the Flames for taking a risk for a guy who may never play a game in the NHL but who they believe does have the potential to be a number 1 center. - flamminghead
Exactly, so why trade down?

Because they could get there guy later and get a 2nd round pick as well. |

Think what he's trying to say is they could of gotten a higher pick with a better track record of being a successful NHL'r than say a 21st overall.
But good on the Flames for getting him when they did, I don't think he would of been around come early in the 7th round...... |

Problem with the Flames ownership is that they're too proud to trade Kipper and poor old Jarome wants to retire there, forget what he could do to help the organization. Both should have been gone 2yrs ago and I was shocked neither one was moved at the deadline or even in the offseason. Now they're value is going to be even lower at the next deadline and will have to settle for a couple picks and prospects.
I believe Feaster is a good GM but his hands are tied when it comes to the big contracts and oldtimers. I think if it were up to him, this team would have been in full rebuild with assets and money to spare to actually sign and ATTRACT free agents. It's a graveyard there right now and will be until the dead weight is moved. - modernhipster
I agree with this mostly, and would argue that some Flames fans try to have it both ways, correctly pointing out that ownership ties Feaster's hands when it comes to rebuilding while also saying he's a bad GM (despite him not having done all that much terrible). That said, this pick greatly lowers my confidence in him right now and I hope I'm proven wrong. |

Honestly, not much different than the Oil picking Moroz so early in the second. He was their guy, and they went for it. Just a little scarrier when its your top pick, as the Oil will have the safety blanket of Yak to say they could take a reach on the second. Still, Feaster did get a second pick out of the deal, plus the guy he coveted. Only time will tell. |

The draft is all about potential. Sure the guy put up numbers in Canadian High School hockey, but will that transition to College or Pro? Who knows. The comment that Feaster made saying he will be the best player in 10 years from this draft class is a little out there. Well he did say the Flames would make the playoffs last year, and we all know how that ended up! |

Stanstead College is a preparatory school in Quebec that plays in a US prep high school league in New England. He'll be on his way to Dubuque next season most likely and Providence in Fall 2013. Although Calgary does seem to like the CHL route for players in which Saginaw holds his rights. Hard to see a 1st round pick take potentially 5 years to graduate and then sign though!! |

Because we got a 2nd. A 21st and 42nd has more chance at getting a good player then a 14th
Great move to get a 2nd, I wish it's was collberg/thrower/sisson
As for the 1st. Big gamble. But the 14th wasn't going to save the team in the next 2yrs so worth it |

Well I guess there is a couple ways to gamble. Personally, I dont mind this pick at 21, its a swing for the fences, he was 2 days away from having a birthday ineligible for the 2012 draft. So he could have beena top 10 pick next year if he's as good as these guys say he is. Also got the 2nd & that Seiloff had some predictions of 1st round. I like him, definitely need dmen like him in the system. Thing is, we should have kept the 14th & took either Ceci or Tervanian. They should have sold one of our veterans for that mid to later pick. They should have had a deal for NJ or LA or give up a little more for that 21st pick. We need to be trading our mid thirty guys for these 1st rounder picks. If we got Jankowski & Ceci or Tervanian, there would have been a lot more happy campers. Why we didnt is whats pissing me off, its to hold on to the past & hope we sneak into 8th again with the same roster. Thats the part that sucks. |

Well if the year truly tanks. Cervenka turns out to be a bust. Kipper and iggy move t deadline putting us in a strong position for mackinon.
If he's all they say he is and with big name ufas out the next year it's better timing to blow things up then this year.

Awe is some one a little envious of the Oilers promising future? That is if you even know what promising future means which judging from the Flames roster you probably don't. |

Stanstead actually plays in the Mid West Prep Hockey League which includes teams from across Canada and the USA. There are 4 Canadian teams in their division and one New York team.
Calgary's Edge Academy is also in the league, Matt Dumba played there.
I don't think any of the teams in the league would technically be New England teams. |

Yeah, there's a few things here that irked me. First is the season ending win streak which meant nothing but a crappy pick. Cgy got 5 out of 6 pts in the last three and moved from 11th to 14th overall.
Who was drafted at 11 again? Oh yeah FORSBERG... or if you prefer a center Grigerenko. Then when the shocker picks happened Teravainen fell into the Flames Lap and they whiffed.
Jankowski was a kid who shot up the rankings as he shot up in hieght. I could see him getting zajac like numbers one day. Not horrible to me obviously but the fact is there was a lot of sure fire skill and the Flames opted to work on Jankowski instead.
UFA day and this summer could be awesome with all the free cap and extra bodies out there...but it won't. Calgary is looked at as disfunctional right now. Like wang in the islanders, owners are too involved making big mistakes. |

If you can't see the difference between Nilson, Cogliano and Gagner or Hall,Eberle,RNH and Yakupov it is time to invest some money in bifocals. |
