You do realize how much profit comes from playoff revenues, right? Especially since the teams don't have to pay the players' salary in the playoffs.

Also, the Canucks have the longest current sellout streak in the NHL, so....

I'm sure revenue for merchandise is slightly more for TO, but I doubt it makes up considerable ground.

You aren't suggesting that the Canucks made anywhere near as much as the leafs last year even with playoff revenue. If you are we can take money out of this whole discussion.

In a nutshell though if the leafs or any other team trade for Lu and give up anything substantial I will eat my words. He just simply isn't worth it. He is 33, an age when many goalies begin to show decreases in performance. He has zero Stanley cup wins. His cap hit is quite big. Would be 3rd or 4th on the leafs. And his contract is for 10 years. Plus the team that has him has to move him or risk losing their other goalie or tying up too much money against their cap to add pieces they need. Van is a horrible bargaining position. They will likely have to take some salary back too.

Adding Luongo would go against everything Tallon is trying to build in Florida. What's wrong with Theodore? He was amazing last season, deserves to be our starter next season, so why this rubbish on Luongo's return?

Yost's recent blog which I agree with contradicts your statement. And is the a really good example of why the leafs should stay away from Lu for both hockey and financial reasons.

Yost's blog is superficial, highly flawed and doesn't even begin to look at the issues of goalies and their price tags in a scientific manner. The comments section details those flaws.

Simply put, we disagree on the quality of goaltending that can be expected out of Luongo. I don't think Reimer will be good enough to help your team make the playoffs and you think paying to get a better goalie in Luongo will not be worth it for your team. We can agree to disagree on the best course of action.

I can see both sides here:
Luongo's value is artificially depressed right now because 1) of his unbearable contract and likely diminishing returns on it for that duration and 2) because everyone knows Vancouver really needs to move him to keep everyone happy and clear cap space. 3) he has a no-trade clause and can limit where he wants to go. Because of that his value in return to Vancouver is depressed and its entirely possible he could be had by a team of his choosing for a rather low price, just in the interest of the Nucks clearing contract space.

In light of that the real question may be: if you could get Luongo for a steal, why wouldn't you? Before I answer that one, a quick look at a rapidly developing goalie situation in Florida:

Remember that while Theo was great, he became more injury prone as the season progressed. Now if we do not sign Clemmer, we virtually have to bring Marky in earlier than they want as a back-up. Consider that is done and one of the two gets hurt- there is absolutely nothing else in the system to replace one with, the cupboard is bare and there is nothing out there right now to trade for that is appealing. So- how likely is an injury to one of those two? Well both went down last year, Clemmer was injured for some time, and Markstrom is coming off back-to-back knee issues.

Now, knowing that, and despite the long contract term, if you could get him for a steal, maybe we need to?

What would Panthers fans think of this trade:

Luongo for Upshall(or Kopecky) + (Petrovic, McFarland or Howden) + (2nd or 3rd)

It would be nice to move Upshall's money off the books (never really got to see what he had this year because of his injury), but one of our great kids and a pick too?? This isn't building for the future, this would be just nuts for the Cats. Tallon knows he needs to stay away from Lu...The Alien will be ready soon enough.
