I love stuff like this:

http://hockeyanalysis.com...hl-free-agent-defensemen/

- MBFlyerfan

As another poster mentioned, the Flyers, with their deep set of talented forwards, were one of the more potent offensive powers in the league, which should be considered when comparing the D men available like they did in that piece. Carle's numbers will look favorable compared to some guys on other teams like Nashville, who employ a more defense oriented system.

Given this, I think it's worthwhile to look at RELATIVE performance in the minutes Carle plays versus others on the Flyers. The Carle fluffers point to his strong even strength play as a big asset (some citing that that BSH article that looked at advanced stats that were used by the author to compare Carle favorably to Ryan Suter). Well, here's a few "advanced" even strength (5v5) stats comparing Carle's production versus others on the team:

Carle ranked 5th, behind Lilja, Grossman, Bourdon, and Timonen terms of the team's save % while he's on the ice.

Carle ranked 5th behind Timonen, Grossmann, Mez, Coburn in terms of +/- relative to the the team (compares his own personal +/- with the team's overall +/-).

Meszaros had almost 30% more point production with his minutes versus what Carle produced with his and had a higher +/- per 60 mins on ice than Carle.

Carle has a lot to do with the team being a very good offensive team.

Maybe they should play Lilja more, with how good the team's save % is while he is on the ice.

So sayeth you...any decent puck mover would put up points here in that role..there's nothing special about Carle that makes him a key to the Flyers offense.

I agree they are facts. So with the teams SV% so high when Lilja is on the ice, maybe he should be a full time regular playing 20 minutes a night instead of Carle.

Loves when stats prove his points. Hates it when stats proves him wrong.

As long as it's not an 35+ contract, I'm cool with it

Sometimes things that don't show up in the stats have to be considered. For example, you probably know from watching Lilja, the answer to that question of why he shouldn't get 20 minutes. Just as those (some) who observed Carle's play see the gaffes and shortcomings that belie/offset to some extent, the (positive) stats the fluffers cite.

You keep referring to fluffers. Who are they? I agree completely that you have to look at all the metrics and all the available information on a player. And when you do that with Matt Carle. There is only one conclusion that you can come to. And that's that Matt Carle is a very good player.

Give him an ownership stake and it's a done deal.

A little late to the party, but the Flyers will have an additional $1.4 million once B. Schenn doesn't play 25 minutes in a game. I believe the $11+ million isn't counting that.

Any interest in Marc-Andre Gragnani - Vancouver is not extending qualifying offer making him a UFA

I think we will have plenty of cap especially with how creative Homer is.

So Carle puts up points just by being on the Flyers. Has nothing to do with the plays he makes? Gotcha!

The Flyers shouldn't re-sign Carle then. They should just get any decent puck mover in here then.

I would make him an offer. He was impressive in the playoffs last year

I think it would depend on if they make other moves that would bring the need to fill that hole.

Definitely a factor, but if he'd play for a mil or so he'd be an excellent 6th/7th guy
