I'm not a fan of Richards at all. Never liked his game much and thought he was highly overrated. Obviously hes a good player. Carter and Richards are both solid at both ends of the ice but I just think Carter was a more skilled an talented player.
- stveshdy

Richards is a poor skater, has only an average release at best, and has an embarrassing physique for a pro athlete -- but he has the ferocity and determination of a honey badger.

I'll take the guy w/ half the skill that wants to win twice as badly any day of the week, because he's the guy who's going to get it done when the chips are down.

Why were coaches in Tampa giving Eminger top pairing minutes with Tampa when he was there? Sometimes a player is given a role above his ability out of need. It doesn't mean it was necessarily the management/coaches preference to do so. I don't think the plan is/was to have Matt Carle lead the team in TOI, so, this wasn't really a preference of the coach so much as a necessity given Pronger's condition, Timo and Mez being hurt/banged up.

Thus, the "coaches playing him 23-25 mins a game" isn't not really saying much more than the coaches trust Carle to get more minutes than the rookies and hobbled vets...which isn't saying all that much when you think about it. It's not an ideal situation to have Carle getting the most minutes on a team that has Cup aspirations. Maybe that's even part of the problem.

- phantasm

It's obvious that the Coaches want Carle to play top minutes on the team. As he has played well over 20 minutes a game for the last 3 Seasons as a Flyer. That is going to continue if he is re-signed. Obviously, Carle shouldn't be leading a team in ice time. That should be for a legitimate #1 defenseman. Which I agree, due to the injuries, the team had to extend Carle's minutes. And Carle stepped up and did well. Especially being paired with a raw Rookie for 40 games.

And I disagree completely that Carle was only playing those minutes because the Coaches trust Carle to get more minutes than the rookies and hobbled vets. Carle is a 20+ minute a game defensman because he is a very good defenseman.

I think the front office here sees every year as "our year".

Will we be better positioned to win the Cup in future years though? Most likely.

- LeachHextall27

thats 37 "our years" with no cup

Richards is not a poor skater. He's an average skater who skates well enough to play in the NHL. His shot is well enough to score 30 goals 2 Seasons and 28 in another. And I've never seen his physique. Nor does it really matter.

The latter point I completely agree with. Richards is a winner, plain and simple. He's won every where he has been. That is no accident.

Again, after a Ryan trade the Flyers would have plenty of financial felxibility to sign a second-pair d-man via FA.

Is that actually true? Sometimes I'm not certain about the cap numbers thrown around here. They seem too generous compared to what reality end up being.
