why can't anaheim just Sign him and then drive the price up for Ryan since then they won't need as many defensemen? Who's to say the Flyers can beat every offer he's gonna get there's other teams looking for defenseman. this isn't NHL13 you don't just look at the FA list and say Oh I want that guy okay click on the offer and sign button. Case in point the Flyers tried to get Brad Richards last year, where he end up? With a team that confetti's their team after a playoff win because it takes a miracle most years for them to get into the playoffs.

Free agent doesn't=automatic Flyer.

Interesting. I could see the Flyers going after him and depending on what he does will change the decision making process of Homer.

If he signs great for the Flyers.

If he doesnt back to the Ryan drama.

they'll get one of the two I bet.

let's trade manning or Lauridsen then not all these guys = 1st round pick for one player. sorry I just didn't realize Ryan was spelled G-R-E-T-Z-K-Y
- JoeRussomanno

An RFA forward that has never scored more then 18 goals, and a top 4 Defenseman is not Gretzky return. No-one said anything about picks. Ryan is a minimum 30 goal scorer. Probally more if teamed up with Giroux and Jagr.

Let me ask you this. If you dont resign Jagr, and Hartnell returns to that 20-25 goal scorer... Who is going to score the goals for you?

If you have a guy you love at #2, you don't trade down to #4 for a 2nd and 3rd round pick (plus all the additional ancillary noise of the other picks) and potentially lose your guy.
- bradleyc4

its not about love its about filling future needs they are all very second and third rd picks...a lot of good players fell into the second rd.

Defense and, more importantly, TEAM defense were a big issue in 2011-12. Adding Ryan, a marginal defensive player at best and subtracting the best defensive player they have in Coburn seems counterproductive. It's not like we need Ryan's offense either. It just doesn't make sense to move something we need like Coburn (or a good two-way player like Voracek) for something that would make an already strong area stronger.
- NickTheKid87

Not saying it isn't a problem, but I think we will find that a lot of the defensive problems this year were due to youth.

This is all speculation. Besides, Giroux makes players better. How many scoring wingers has Sidney Crosby played with?

It is about love. When you have a pick that high, you target someone you've fallen in love with.

You don't trade down two spots for a handful of lottery tickets and *hope* you get the guy you want.

I worry about a sophomore slump. We had too many youngins on this team last year. Plus with Jagr getting up in age, it was a matter of time till a team took advantage of that. If Jagr is gone and these guys have slumps, our goal scoring will be much lower. I'm not saying give the farm for Nash or Ryan. I'm not saying throw 9 million to Parise. We do need a little more scoring that is consistent.

I do agree but the Flyers could play better defensively and they wont have to score as many goals either. Cant be in the bottom 10 in GAA and expect to compete for a championship imo. I'm going to support whatever Homer decides to do this offseason.

The Flyers could lose 20 goals out of their total and still be a contender, they score an abundance of goals. you seem to think Wellwood is a 20 goal scorer, I'm inclined to agree with you.

No one said anything about picks? all I been reading is Voracek +Coburn (arguably this year's best defenseman for us)/Mezaros(last year's best defenseman for us)+picks. That's absurd. I don't mind a Voracek and prospect or later round draft pick, but you guys are really underestimating what Voracek can become. 18 goals at 21/22 years of age isn't bad and Ryan wasn't scoring goals in the NHL from 19-22 years of age he was playing in the minors.

Voracek is sound defensively (something the flyers need) with tremendous offensive upside. IF anything what we should be doing is trying to get a forward through FA we just made moves to improve our D and Bobby Ryan isn't a world breaker the Flyers can and will compete without him. He'd be a great addition to the Flyers yes but overpaying for him would defeat the purpose which is building a cup team unless of course we just want to win fantasy leagues I don't know maybe that's what it is...

Schultz. Getting him would allow the Flyers to trade a defenseman imo.

Sign Schultz and then trade him straight up to Anaheim for Ryan...

Then we have a sophmore slump. I hear people talk all the time how they would go through eons of losing seasons to see the Cup here. If that's the case a sophmore slump should be short-order to getting there. Furthermore what slump was La in all year? We have a great roster as it stands, let's not screw it up to satisfy some delirious fantasy of having a hometown phenom on the team. I want him too but the price has to be right or forget it. So far the prices I've seen have been laughable at best considering what we got in return for Richards and Carter last year. Voracek+top 4 D+1st round pick just begs to question...

I would rather keep Schultz. That would give the Flyers two very young promising defenseman (Schultz & Schenn).

I would be willing to trade another defenseman to get Ryan after signing Schultz.

In principle (about defensemen), I agree.

But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If your the CBJs and you think this kid is going to be a perennial all-star, you don't make that trade.

Not sure I believe that report. It would be stupid for Columbus to turn down all those picks but even dumber for the NYI to offer all those picks to move up 2 spots when they still drafted a very good defenseman. Not buying the story.

Although its being reported as true.

All those reporters that cited sources saying Homer misled JVR sure looked silly this weekend after JVR's agent spoke up.

he was joking because anaheim drafted schultz and he refused to sign there.

But, having Schultz would be awesome -- another right handed shot.

They should be ashamed of themselves. Did any of them offer an apology? I can't seem to recall, maybe I'm wrong...

if you wanted sbisa i would do

Voracek+(Mez only d i give up)+1st

for

Ryan+sbisa..

- Philly1980

In longer term, I'd probably rather have Sami Vatanen than Sbisa (despite the size difference).

It's my hope he keeps saying stuff like this: unpopular but not harmful to the team, so that overreactionaries will give up the ghost and give way to fans who are not so volatile.
