I think offensive minded defenseman is to generic. For example, you have Carle and Timonen who are a great passers, but they dont have the shot to score goals. While Meszaros and Bourdon might not be the best passers, but they have a pretty good shot. That is what I was trying to say.

Bourdon surpried me a bit this year with a few good shots. He had 4 goals in about half a season. Not terrible in his first real taste of the bigs.

Too bad Read's value isn't as high as Jakes. Looking at the long-term once Briere and Hartsy are gone, I like Jake's skillset. We really do need a sniper, so Ryan makes sense. But Jake would be nice to have too.

Ryan - G - Schenn
Simmonds - Couts - Vorachek
XXX / Talbot - Laughton - Cousins / XXX

I like having Jake's skillset vs. Reads.

But who knows what else they would do in a few years too.

I disagree. I think Read's value is higher then Jakes. He is cheaper by a guestimate of 2.5-3 million. Is better offensively goal scoring wise, and better defensively. And he is much faster on his skates.

As I said the other day, if JVR doesn't improve at all, he's still a top 6 forward that will score 20-25 goals. If Schenn doesn't improve at all he's a 5/6 d-man.

Clearly, the Flyers are banking on him improving, which I think is a fair expectation. But right now, today, we traded a top 6 forward for a 5/6 d-man.

ugh. I was sarcastically overstating Voracek having 0 finish, but his goals were not the goal scorer's goal variety. A lot came from defelections, screened goalies, and some luckey shots. Maybe not all, but most.

As for Wellwood. I have no idea what he can do. His speed is killer, and if he can just learn some moves maybe 20 isnt out of the question....

- RooNosHockey

Do you have an data to support that? Because I remember some very nice goals scored by Voracek. How do you define what a lucky shot is? I wasn't aware that stating that Voracek had zero finish, didn't really mean that he has zero finish.

So with Wellwood having more finish then Voracek has, 20 goals isn't out of the question to expect?

Jake is 22 and Read is 26
Jake higher contract
Read cheaper contract

Basically. They also need a 4th line center, IMO.

Older and less experienced though. Read will be 26 next season while Jake will be 23. Who knows if Read will be a threat in years to come too. He's much more of an unknown. I also think Jake is more talented in general. As far as speed goes, they both can fly so that's a non-factor.

I would also like to point out that after his first concussion he worked on his shot in the minors and it really showed on his second stint, before the second concky.

I think he's going to continue to improve. Hoepfully so does Schenn. If we slot Schenn in the 5 or 6 spot to begin with..mentor him etc.. Maybe he surprises us. I like the trade more and more each day. Not to often do you get your hands on a 22 yr old dman with 4 yrs experience and upside to be a 3/4 defensive dman.

FIRE HOWSON NOW!

Isles Offered Entire Draft
POSTED JUN 25, 2012 BY AARON PORTZLINE | 0 COMMENTS
How highly did the Blue Jackets value defenseman Ryan Murray before taking him with the No. 2 overall pick in Friday's first round of the NHL Draft? Enough to turn down an eye-opening offer from the New York Islanders, who, according to numerous NHL sources, offered all of their picks -- one in each round -- for the right to move up from No. 4 to No. 2 for Murray.
That's right, for the Jackets' No. 2 pick, the Islanders offered pick Nos. 4, 34, 65, 103, 125, 155 and 185. The bounty would have given the Jackets the following picks: 4, 31, 34, 62, 65, 95, 103, 125, 152, 155, 182 and 185. And if that weren't enough, the Jackets could have had the Kings' No. 30 if they wanted it.
Next week's development camp would have required two sheets of ice.
Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson offered a "no comment" when reached by The Dispatch late Sunday. After Friday's first round, he did mention a "very attractive" trade offer the Blue Jackets declined before selection Murray, a precocious prospect whom many think could play in the NHL this season.
The Islanders, unable to move up for Murray, drafted highly-touted defenseman Griffin Reinhart with the No. 4 pick. But they didn't stop there. The Islanders spent all seven of their picks on defensemen.

I think Schenn will improve. As Bill and others have pointed out, it is fairly common for d-men to do much better with their second team (a la Coburn). Also, he will have a chance to learn from savvy vets like Kimmo (and possibly Pronger if he is able to be involved with the team at all). I don't expect him to stay at the 5/6 level forever, but I think he'll start there until he gains some confidence and starts to improve.
