The Isles taking seven "D" men in this draft shows you what they thought of the organizational depth at the position. I think lots of people on these boards drastically overrate many of the "prospects" this team has on defense. Outside of de Haan, Donovan and Mayfield, I don't think the Isles really thought they had any sure-fire contributors on "D" at the NHL Level. I read that Pedan had a terrible year last season. They obviously don't feel too strongly about Wishart or Katic. Ness is real small and despite all his skill, he may never make it since he's small and not a physical player.
I'm psyched about Reinhart. I loved that selection after Murray was gone. With all the depth at forward, they needed to go heavy on "D". Plus, I love that the "D" they drafted are mostly big kids, not a bunch of Ness-sized mites that are incapable of hitting or moving anyone. It was a good draft only magnified by the trade for Visnovski. - Jethro09
very much agree with this....
the thing id say to those people who whine about drafting only defense is as EVERYONE knows, defensemen take longer to develop which works twofold; 1) they are more of an unknown when they are younger IE now at draft day, and therefore might have A LOT more to grow and 2) they take longer to develop so stockpile as many as possible and get to work on the dmen.
people can always find a reason to complain, to whine that they took all defensemen is ridiculous simply because had they taken a forward in the last few rounds he would have ZERO impact on the islanders this coming year so why get bent out of shape.
for the reasons posted above, i applaud the picks simply because of the defensemen-known theory...might as well throw (pick) as many defensemen against the wall and see which stick....very happy the way friday went (especially with my boy reinhart!!) |

i also think people on these boards over rate size...unless the guy is 5'6 size size isn't an issue - NYI78
i totally disagree and would go even further and say a team cant have enough size....look at previous playoff teams and tell me which have done well and advanced with smaller teams (i havent even looked but would be willing to bet the overwhelming majority of teams were BIG) |

Why is everyon do eager to trade de haan? He played amazing when he was up here(for a rookie). Literally no mistakes, +1 (on a third pairing whose partner was probably -34 for the year), even looked good on the power play. I wanna keep him |

i would tweak your comment a little...i dont think everyone is "eager" to trade him but more they would be "willing" to trade him if the return is worth trading him...seems like most people here want a "big" trade, in order for that to happen, you gotta give to get. |

I Dont want to see him traded, unless its in a deal for a top 2 D-men. We may have added all these prospects but none of them are ready & is. Just because we added 7 prospects doesn't make him expendable. Until those prospects are ready to play in the NHL... Calvin shouldnt be moved.

I'm really interested to see dehaan and donovan get a shot this year. I think both of them would be a great upgrade over last season's defense, however having both of them in the lineup at the same time could make things a little rougher on Nabby. I'd rather see them make mistakes and develop than see Eaton/Jurcina back though.

I dont see how this D could be any worse then what we saw last year... Id rather see young hungry kids.. then that cluster f&*k we saw back there this season.

if it's gonna look like a gong show it may as well be with the kids playing. No point in having them sit in the ahl...unless of course they're going to be played on the fourth line with useless scrap pieces for 2 minutes a game like Nino did.
at some point we should see improvement, right? |

I like Reinhart better than Murray too, I think that's just rediculous; for both sides. Islanders to offer and Columbus to not accept |

hungry kids in the Dzone can lead to another cluster f@ck. They need to add another veteran top four. If Snow wants to insert someone they think deserves a shot(DeHaan, Donovan, etc..) that's fine but adding one more top four would be huge. |

BEYOND ridiculous for Columbus not to accept that. And if really true, Garth needs his head examined. More so than normal. |

I agree but we watched larger players steam roll over our smaller/weaker guys. Unfortunately size does matter(that's what she said!). - Cptmjl
if you have a defense of guys who are between 6 feet and 6'2 with one big guy your fine..problem is we have had 5'8 dmen who are 175 soaking wet |
