JVR's upside is far higher than Schenn's. and having drafted Rielly and Finn, long term, this was a no-brainer for Burke. very smart trade, even if JVR doesn't work out.

The writing was on the wall when we saw that Reilly, a Dman had been taken at no. 5

While I really like Rielly's skill, until we see that his surgically-repaired knee can withstand the rigours of the NHL, I won't get my hopes up. Either way I like the comparisons to Karlsson, the guy's a great skater and has soft hands.

The gut I'm really happy about was Finn. Considering how high he was expected to go we got a freakin' steal

Can someone help me out here. What is the big deal about Lou's 10 years remaining?

He signed it before he was 35 so he can retire whenever and we're not on the hook, no?

- Tee-Dot

He will suck after 4-5 years and refuse to retire and screw the team over until he finishes his last minute of the contract.

It's obvious he knew he was going to make this trade going into the draft... Finn is probably the guy replacing Schenn in the long-run.

But we cant dictate when he retires. What if he starts playing like sh!t at 35? No one would take him, we would be screwed.

Im not saying this will happen, but its a possibility, and with a big contract, our hands would be tied.

If that happens I'll explode...

Well he came into the league and played solid minutes at 18. Then he got a coach who according to him "never talked to him". I think the potential is there.

and you think he's gonna retire with 3-4 years left on his deal, regardless of it being backloaded? what if he thinks he can still play at that point? you're gonna eat that cap hit and bury him in the minors? you need to ask yourself if he's going to be good enough in the short term to be worth the problems he could create in the long term. don't forget--we haven't seen the reprecussions of any of these long-term deals yet.
- DoubleDown

I really highly doubt he sticks around after 5-6 years simply because he 'wants' to. At that point he'll have either succeeded and is ready to retire, or will be washed up and see the writing on the wall.

Either way he won't settle for being an overpaid backup living in TOR while making crumbs compared to the first few years on his contract when he can just retire to a comfy life in Florida or wherever the hell he wants to spend his retirement.

I think the risk of this guy being a menace after 5 years on the Leafs is absurd. He won't just stick around and be a burden like he is now in VAN.

The way I see it, with Luongo, we should basically spend the next 4 years using our 2nd & 3rd round picks to draft all goalies in order to ensure that by the time Lu's ready to retire, we'll have a young guy who's received enough conditioning to take over. It certainly won't be one of the two guys we have now.

Good. If Burke does somehow manage to get him for a 1985 Hyundai Pony and Neil Patrick Harris's butt plug... I will have no complaining on here.

We instantly became better by just ridding ourselves of Schenn

We are a better team WITHOUT Schenn ..... Period

- faceto27

And yet just a few days ago he was too much to add on for 1st overall.

He can still be buried in the minors, as he has a NTC, not a NMC; however, his actual dollars don't drop until 2018/19, so it's still a lot of cash to have in the minors.

In 2018/19 the actual $$ value is 3.8 million, then 1.6 a year after that, then 1.0 after that.

Holzer is replacing Schenn in this upcoming year imo.

Phaneuf - Gunnarson
Komisarek - Liles
Holzer - Gardiner
Franson

Sub Franson in if someone gets traded, and add Blacker into mix.

They would probably want a defenceman in there like Franson, or at the very least a 1st round pick.

But yes that's a start

you mean frontloaded... in minors they don't eat the cap hit, and his salary drops way off.

you really think he's going to play for $1M a year, when that will likely be less than the league minimum on and ELC by then?

I don't. but if he does, but him out for the $350k a year that it would be (depending on when they do it.)
