Garrison is better than Finger. His offense may be a "one-year wonder" (we'll see) but he's been pretty good in his own end of the ice for a couple years now.

I was referring more to the premium that teams end up paying for UFA Dmen. Hopefully the Finger/Commodore types will give GMs pause although it only takes one...

I wouldn't trade Coburn. Just signed him and I don't think they can afford to trade ANOTHER recently signed young player. Plus I think he's extremely important this next year with timonens status up in the air.

Anaheim GM planned on meeting with Ryan after the draft to clear the air, so I'd think if he's moved, it'll be sooner than later. Just my opinion.

Trade for Ryan and get shultz's rights it's a risk but if we did that I would say we upgraded our d that's if Schultz signs of course

The main factor of the JVR deal was 6 years. If he progressed on the line that he established in the playoffs 2 years ago he would have been way underpaid in the middle of his contract. That contract doesn't look as good today, but that's Toronto's problem now.

Voracek has no leverage. If he wants the 4.25 that JVR got and the Flyers say no, what are his options? Hold out? Demand a trade? I'm not sure what advantage he gains by not playing. I'm a big fan of Voracek but it's not like he made night and day strides from the player he was when he was acquired. He's a good solid 2nd line RFA winger that gives you some PP time and 20 goals.

And Giroux makes 3.75 so let's not talk comparables.

I mean comparible wingers in the league. I wasn't saying he gets similar to JVR's contract. No way. But I was thinking more like. (if he gets multi year). 4 years $14 million $3.5 cap hit. Or in that range maybe. It's all about how the team feels about the player as well. (like how they felt about dumping 9 years on bryzgalov)

I honestly think this trade is complete foreshadowing of B. Ryan and/or Parise. Flyers go extremely hard for Parise and if they miss out B. Ryan. Or they go hard for Parise and acquire him and then ship Voracek, Meszaros, and a 2nd to Anaheim for B. Ryan (P.S. don't think this is a deal I'd want to do, but it would have to be something along these lines to get Ryan). Carle is resigned.

By the way, I'm extremely excited to see Cousins in camp.

Every time you hear a rumor it's the same names. But then you never know what Anaheim would really take, don't see them accepting any less than an NHL ready forward and a same type defenseman as they have serious depth issues

Coburn won't replace Visnovsky. I think Meszaros would make more sense.

Most likely the Flyers were/are looking into Ryan. What if ANA didn't want JVR? The Flyers can't force ANA into a player just because we want to dump them. Maybe ANA is looking for defense or picks.

Another thing I don't get is the most people think in linear terms of one trade at a time, i.e. offense for offense, defense for defense. The Rumor of Coburn for Ryan, if true, may not look good on the surface. But, if Homer pulls the trigger on this deal - he may have another deal/signing for another defenseman to fill the gap. I'd like to see Homer's "war room".

And, Homer has been rumored as interested in multiple signed players and UFA. Some are high priced... I assume that if they pick up a Weber, Praise, etc... Homer will have a plan to fit within the cap. As he said regarding the draft - pick the best player available... I assume he uses that logic for trades and signing UFA - as long as it fits within the cap.

Agreed. I'm not writing Schenn off, he can become a very solid player. I'm not sure his ceiling is a top pairing d-man though, while JVR potentially can be a first line power forward.

The same can be said for JVR. I'm not sure his ceiling is anything more than a 2nd line winger. See how that works? Flyers fans are pissed because we drafted him 2nd overall and see what he COULD become thinking we should have got more. On the flip side Schenn was drafted 5th overall and COULD become that top pair shut-down defenseman. Hate to say it, but JVR and Schenn are identical, in terms that both have more potential than most and haven't reached that potential for one reason or another. That's why the trade was 1 for 1 and it makes sense. We can't over value JVR because he was a Flyer. That said if both reached their potential what's worth more? 35 goal scorer or top pairing defenseman? That's why I think this deal is good for the Flyers... now it's just a matter of which player reaches potential.

Ditto on Cousins. I don't see us trading any D at all unless we are getting D via FA or back in a trade.
