A season and a half of broken down wendel clark for roberto luongo is a gem too.

I'm not saying they didn't get anything back in return; they got a great player. The timing of the trade is what makes it so bad IMO. When a team is a piece or two away from truly contending is when I'd make a trade like that, not at what should be the outset of a rebuild.
- Domidives

THe timing doesn't matter, the outcome does.

and that doen't make the trade good or bad. The end result does.

I think the results of late can be looked at as well, not just the end result.

what does you mean?? the results of late, as in Kessel being a top scorer? I don't know what you mean here.

I never said I liked the trade. Quite the contrary. I completely agree that it was a dumb move, and I've said so since it was just a rumour.

Where I disagree is the idiots that try to exaggerate and call it one of the worst in franchise history, or the worst in the nhl in the past ten years. It just shows ignorance as far as I'm concerned.

Thoroughly disagree. Gutting the team of first round picks for a star is pretty pointless when that star has nobody to play with. How are you going to get the players to surround him?

Those that claim its the worst trade in franchise history are pretty clueless, imo. There have been enough trades where good, even great players, have gone the other way, with NOTHING in return, that kessel for the picks doesn't come close.

Kurvers for the niedermeyer pick ring a bell? Do you think kurvers was ever a better dman than kessel is right now? As good as seguin is, do you think he's in niedermeyers territory?

Courtnall for Kordic anyone?

Yup.

I don't like the trade, for a multitude of reasons, some of which domidives has pointed out. But because its the leafs, it gets blown out of proportion.

Let's just call it what it is, a bad idea of a trade that worked out poorly. But nowhere near the disaster that some want to portray it as.

This has been debated to death. What's done is done. All teams do things that are questionable...Radulov/AK?

Exactly. I supported the trade then and I support it now. If the Bruins ended up with the 13th, 14th pick or something, there wouldn't be much of a discussion about it. Who could have known we'd finish 2nd last in the league? Kessel is still a 24-year-old sniper that finished 6th in scoring without a true number one center. They don't come cheap. Going forward he's still the best player in the deal. Until Hamilton and Knight prove themselves worthy or unworthy, which still could be years down the road, we can't truly judge the deal. And by then.....will we still even care?

ya getting the 6th top scorer in the league was a poop idea... fire him
- DarcyTucker16

Pretty short-sighted answer.....how does Tyler Seguin, Dougie Hamilton and Jared Knight sound? Much better than Kessel thats for sure....

For a not so deep draft Burke did well, Reilly and Forsberg were my guesses for the 5th, in the end Burke made the right call! Finn was a steal as well.. and like I said before the draft, good chance of a D prospect at 5th as it adds more to the defensive cupboard for the Leafs so they can acquire a top 6 forward. Burke's plan isn't as obvious as you all think, there's some imagination brewing and I can't wait to see it unfold, don't worry Leaf fans Burke and team know what their doing and haters keep hating, it keeps us hungry and motivated to improve!
