Luke Schenn is only 22 years old. Defenseman usually take more time to develop. The kid has potential to be very good.

I'd say most pwr forwards take as much time as dmen and in that case JVR has certainly shown more - in big games no less- than schenn ever has.

Luke will be a good shut down guy... people saying he sucks are just like talking crap. He has had 2 bad seasons but when he played well, he was Toronto's top Dman. He is a loyal team mate as well... sticks up for his team mates and will fight just about anyone. He will fit in Philly perfectly and the fans will love him.
- bleedingblu

no one saying schenn sucks...just that the value is stronger for TOR because of the relative upsides.

Will see but I disagree. I feel its much harder to play defense in the NHL than be a forward, imo.

I was gonna say

Guy's a leader though... I'm sure he'll be a fan favourite if he can get his skating back.

it is , but JVR is the much more dynamic plyr...a 1st line talent. schenn likely tops out as a 2nd pair complement to an offensive partner.

Here's the thing...

If JVR does not improve one bit from his current level of play, he is still a top 6 forward who will score 20-25 goals.

If Luke Schenn does not improve one bit from his current level of play, he's a 5/6 defenseman that will have trouble staying in the lineup on a team that plays an up tempo style.

Not equal value if nothing changes.

Obviously the Flyers think he'll improve, and in a few years this will seem like a fair deal. But right now, the players are not equal. I think that's what is bothering a lot of folks about this deal. Just have to hope the Flyers are right about what the future holds.

I'm not sold that JvR will be a first line talent. I think this trade is pretty even as the Flyers get what they needed most a young talented defenseman. Schenn has a lot of potential just like JvR. You have to give to get. If Homer had the opportunity to get a better defenseman just using JvR he would of done it but this trade makes the most sense for both teams.

After this year where the Flyers basically played without JvR made it easier for Homer to make this trade. He is getting a young defenseman back who has potential. Schenn has time to develop here being on the third pairing (and maybe some time on 2nd). He's still a very young player and defenseman take longer to develop imo.

They certainly seem to fall out of favor with young players pretty quickly.
Carter & Richards as cornerstones & 2-3 years later - gone

Giroux and JVR will now lead this team, "here kid, here's $25 million for 6 years for looking like a beast in a particular playoff game, (I know it was a little more than just the one game) now JVR -- gone as well.

Don't disagree. Was simply stating why I believe some fans are not happy with the deal.

Then you also have the crowd that thinks since JVR hasn't been Patrick Kane 2.0 he's a failure and sucks. So they're thrilled I would imagine.

Lastly, I think the aspect to this that nobody is considering is the impact this deal could have on re-signing Matt Carle. With JVR gone, if Carle re-signs he would be the sole whipping boy without JVR there to share that duty. One could reasonably expect him to demand more money to offset the pain and suffering the Flyers largely irrational and hockey-illiterate fan base can dole out over the course of a season. This could be a serious impediment to any new deal.

Remember the Detroit theory that we followed?

Stock up on D. & use a crappy goalie. (Leighton)

We had Kimmo.(for another year), Mez. Coburn. Grossmann. & possibly Carle staying, I thought we were ok (if we sign carle) as again, now we're paying $5 million to a top goalie, do we require spending more $ on D?
This surely means Carle is gone so "did we improve out team"? Same as last summer, I don't think anyone really knows

Does our up and down style fit Schenn's stay at home style?
