Could be wrong, but it seems to me over the last year or so, drafting, free agency and trading, (excluding the carter and richards deals) Holmgren has leaned toward proven commodities. Schenn is far from a proven commodity as he is still young. Although he has a lower potential ceiling than JvR. He is a steady and to this point non injury prone defenseman who at the worst will be a middle of the road 3-5 physical defenseman and at the best a shutdown D. JvR with the higher ceiling but with his injuries has a much further downside. Look at the Talbot and Jagr signings. Then even the last two first round picks. Great defensive forwards that are going to be solid NHL players at the least. Maybe not superstars but almost locks to have a positive impact. Idk just a trend I have seen from Holmgren since the beginning of last off season. He already has his top end talent in Giroux and Schenn, now he is building solid players around them. Thoughts?

I don't hate this move. I don't like it either. I think the Flyers overpaid, and got the lesser player. But what's done is done. I like Schenn as a young defenseman. But now I'm wondering what else is going to happen. Because I don't understand it if there aren't some dominoes here.

Flyers must have had concerns about the many injuries with JvR going forward.
- FlyerGuy

we can speculate all day and not get anywhere, but if sure feels like the flyers either a) think that schenn has a higher ceiling than we are giving him credit for or b) saw something in jvr this year that turned them off

I gotta say I'm not a fan of this move at all.
Also The Flyers and Holmgren are really starting a horrible trend in trading away players signed to extensions - just as their extension deals kick in.

- Pixote Andolini

What makes that a horrible trend ff they are making moves they feel are better for the team?

That is a fair statement no doubt maybe 5 years from now JVR is the next LeClair.
Then again maybe LS meets his potential also .
That's the thing about potential until though both players could have already reached their ceiling. Lets say though through this move we have the cap space to sign Parise..
Their has to be move coming with the cap space they have avail.

Also I keep seeing this quote in various places, "Jvr went beast mode in the playoffs a few years ago" ..Lets be honest, he really didn't . He had 7 goals , 0 assists and was a minus 3 . Yes , he dominated one game which the Flyers lost anyway.

Neither player has established themselves as a top player yet and I just think its too early to really say much about this trade.

A positive on L. Schenn: Leafs got the usual young D growing pain period. Many D do better in their SECOND org and think it'll be the same.

Really you'd gut the team and defeat the purpose of all the moves from last summer till now just to see those two together?
- JoeRussomanno

Well I was on board to trade JvR in a deal to get him but that is not an option now, so like I said in the post... not sure how they would get it done but I would love it. If they could do it without trading G, Schenn, Couturier... yea I'd do it.

I don't understand people's logic here. There's no way we're getting Ryan. The trading chip we needed to get Ryan just got shipped to Toronto. We traded a top 6 forward for a d-man. That means we have 1 less than we did last year. With Jagr, make that 2. Now we want to entertain the thought of trading 2 top-6 forwards for Ryan? That would leave us 3 forwards out.

I just don't get people.....

I think the move also freed up a roster spot for a second pairing D-man in order to sign Shultz. I know if it does come true the two moves are completely independent of each other, but essentially it works out to be LS for JVR and Shultz.

I believe there are intangibles that caused jvr to be traded. Flyers have had enough. He knew how to play the media and fans. I know that he wasn't missed last year but I'll tell you what was... A defenseman that would knock the poop out of people.

After the stellar draft, and fantastic trade, I would think the Shelley extension.

It was said that we are not sure how it could happen now that JvR was moved.

I don't see how it opens up a hole for a second pairing D man.

You're not gonna start that now are you? JVR was a good kid, this wasn't about moving a bad apple as it was strengthening a weakness on the blueline.

He might have said he'd like to play with Crosby, but he'd be crazy to not think there's more upside to playing with G than the newly dubbed Melon head.

I hate the look of a jersey with the initial for a first name on it. So tacky. Not sure I like the deal either. Could they have kept JVR and signed Bryan Allen?

Would be interesting! I wonder what kinda contract he is looking at? What did the top forward on the market get last year? Can't remember
