I have to agree with the poster on the previous page, I think Pittsburgh made out like a bandit on the Staal deal. Sutter fits the #3centre role perfectly (a lot more then Staal ever did). Most dont know much about Dumoulin because he plays college hockey in the US and not Major Jr in Canada. He's easily one of the top offensive Dmen in college hockey today and is probably the hidden gem in this deal.

Great deal for both teams in my opinion.

Well first off take Crosby and Malkin off of this list as they play on the same team as Staal and arent going anywhere. Second, he plays on the same team as Crosby and Malkin, So he really hasn't had a whole lot of time playing the number 1 or 2 role. Don't say he is overrated till we get a chance to see what he can do being number 1 in carolina, he is only 24 and had 50 pts in 62 games last season and led the pens in scoring in the shootout that was the philly pens series and by far the best series of this years playoffs. Is clouts over rating this guy or are you seriously underrating him???

I also agree Pittsburg got a great deal for Staal, the only thing is when one of Crosby or Malkin gets hurt Sutter isn't really a guy who can step into that second line role as well as Staal did.

Actually, I think the pick was an admission by Toronto that Schultz has made up his mind, and it isn't them.

I can't help but wonder if Burke knows he was caught tampering, and had to back off because of it. It looks more and more likely to me that Schultz will be signing with the Oilers.
The lack of a big trade to acquire a D man on Friday suggests Oilers management are not willing to give up quality prospects to bring in a top pairing player. Hemsky is definitely available, and the Oilers could move draft picks and other less-impressive prospects to bring in someone.

My belief is, the Oilers are prepared to go forth with Petry, Smid, Whitney, J. Schultz, and Nick Schultz as their first five. The 6th will be dealt for...and if no one can be acquired, they could go with Sutton, Potter, Teubert or Peckham in the #6 role. I've been insisting for a while now that the Oilers won't be a playoff team in 2012/2013, mainly because management is not prepared to move out assets like Paajarvi or Hartikainen in order to make a big deal.

With teams like the Penguins being hella deep with quality D prospects, you never know...a huge deal could occur. Yandle is still available, from what I hear.

- Maxbone

What a crock!!...How many D were picked in the top 10? Every team wants D, and T.O. plans on tweaking theirs and unloading the excess for upfront help and possibly a goalie...the Marlies have Mikus(sp) going to Europe, and Holzer ready to come up next season and Finger is finally gone so there's 3 open spots on the farm right there...Reilly is at least 2 years away from the big club, and Shultz is signing with the Leafs...deal with it or don't deal with it, but that's what will happen

I think Pittsburgh won the day?
- LeftCoaster

If there is a work stoppage, they sure did.

The 'canes just gave up a full picnic basket for a guy who may not play another game before becoming a UFA.

Just let it go.

Apparently Burke re-wrote his draft strategy because he got caught tampering on Schultz, but Edmonton is proceeding with their longterm plans that include Schultz.

But Edmonton isn't tampering. They are as pure as the driven snow.

Which, of course, there is a lot of in Edmonton.

I am pretty sure there isnt a lot of snow in Edmonton right now if any. But i will take your word for it seeing as you are a fan of a team from the center of the hockey universe and the center of canada

Was there a different draft I wasn't aware of? Because the one I watched showed the Penguins giving away Jordan Staal. One of the Top 10 centers in the NHL, if you believe people who comment on my blogs.
- Maxbone

How do you write on here? You are clueless.

People and Penguins fans laughed when Pittsburgh took Goligoski. They turned him into Neal and Niskanen. He turned Whitney into Kunitz and Tangradi.

Pittsburgh found Kris Letang in the third round.
They plucked Despres deep in the first round.
Harrington in the second and Morrow 23rd.

Now you're doubting Shero's choice of Pouliot? Shero has shown he can find great defense through the draft and uses them to address whatever needs the team has.

Then you say a guy nobody has ever heard of? Maybe if you were a hockey fan and actually followed the game, you'd know who he was. A simple visit to Carolina boards will show you that they were VERY disappointed to lose Dumoulin. He was slotted just behind Faulk (who is a d stud), and Murphy (also a stud) in their prospect rank. He's quite possibly the best dman in college right now.

Nice hockey knowledge. Man, they'll let anyone write on here.

I agree with this. I made a point of checking this blog to listen to Richard eat crow. We got GREAT value for staal. Much better than what he was expecting. Not sure what planet you live on Cloutier, but the consensus among most is that that deal was highway robbery. Just pa-rousing the Canes message boards on their site and they are pretty upset. Oh well, to each their own I suppose.

Shhhhhhhh! According to the blogger, Pittsburgh screwed up big.

It's nice to see someone that actually knows what they're talking about. I fully agree with you.

When a player has ONE year left on his deal and has basically made it known that he's going to play with his brother, you're lucky to get anything. It's not like Carolina needed Jordan this year in a big way. I'm extremly happy that Pittsburgh got what they did.

Thanks to Sather for stepping up and forcing Carolina to up their offer!

Wow u couldn't be less knowledgable about hockey, staal was going to Carolina he rejects a 10 year deal frOm the pens, no team is gonna give up assests for a guy whose not gonna sign. The pens got the guy they wanted to replace staal, suttee might not be a staal but is an excellent third line guy which is what the pens need. They obliviously wanted pouliott that's why they took him so high. And if staal was signed for the next 3-4 years yes he would have been worth the first overall, just like Campbell it took away from his value, solid value for pitt IMO

Yakupov...YAY! Sure, sign me up for Hemsky for Franson...TOR needs a centre now they drafted Rielly, honestly don't know what Burke was doing....interesting how TSN comments on Rielly playing with Phaneuf, rather than Gardiner is a nice combo. Maybe Schultz is really coming to EDM, if he wants top 4 minutes, EDM is the place.

PIT got robbed in my opinion. Not because of the package, but because PIT decided to pick Derrick Pouliot at #8. PIT had full control as to who comes into the organization and drafting Derrick Pouliot is not ideal at #8, but see what happens. Sutter is a good fit for 3C in PIT.

CGY needs help...more help than just plain simple help...the future looks gloomy for the Flames. Feaster dropped down because CGY did not have a 2nd round pick, ok, fine, but then Jankowski??!?! Poor asset management and if they don't look at trading Kipper and Iginla, even worst asset management. Good for BUF!

2nd round, my pick would also be Ludvig Bystrom like Richard, looked at Finn, Frk, Collberg, and a few others yesterday, I like Bystrom or Dansk.

The fans of the CBJ need an intervention. There isn't a move Howson makes that proves he's capable of being a GM.

The list is too long. The most recent highlights: overpaying for another goalie project and selecting a d-man when forwards and goaltending are the real issues with the team (Wiz, JJ, Moore, Savard, Tyutin, Nikitin). Murray could very well be 'Captain' material but JJ captained the US team in the WC.

See one thing that some of you are forgetting is that the Penguins are not in the same situation as teams that are normally picking in the top 10. They aren't looking for a player to come in and instantly turn their team around. With that pick they were able to draft the player that they wanted, not needed.

Interesting read,

re: your comments on the Pitt/Carolina trade

Sam Gagner better than Sutter?!?!? Edmonton can't seem to give away Gagner. Take it from someone who watches the East a lot, Brandon Sutter is a legit 2-way physical forward... Pitt won't lose a step with this trade (in the long run)... especially if they squeeze in Parise with the free cap space. BTW, per Pierre MacGuire, Dumoulin is a future NHL D also.

Good move for both teams

So Pitt gave up quality for quantity. Is fair.

Their actual depth at center takes a hit, they get a guy that is not going to be over paid to play 3C due to being a 2C, and they get a couple of kids in the pool.

I heard our scouts had him near the top of all defensemen. They got the guy they wanted. Although I would have taken one of the falling forwards.
