Until he signed in Carolina as a UFA next year.

Pens did fine with the deal...got a good young prospect in Pouliot, a strong young 3rd line Centre, free up cap space to add a winger or another veteran D. Staal gets to play with his brother. Sounds like a win - win.

You'd be fine with trading that 5th for Staal? So when he doesn't sign an extension because he wanted to go to Carolina, what then?

I can't believe that Forsberg could be gotten potentially outside the top 10...

If a guy's stock falls dramatically on draft day, are the teams that pass on him idiots?

Or were those teams justified in passing on him?

I'm thinking of Forsberg and Grigs, in particular. The lower each of these guys fall, the more comfortable I am passing on them. Scouts must have seen something.

Lateral move defensively. Both are excellent but Staal has quite a bit more offensive upside. Good for both teams imo but the winner will be decided by how well Pouliot turns out.

I just checked his tweets. He really did say that two teams were in on Staal, one was Canes, other was Oilers. Said Canes were closest, reluctant to include 8th pick AND Sutter. They gave in.
