Agreed, since the salary cap, the rebuilding of a team takes patience. Burke didn't have any and set this team back on its development curve. He was able to acquire many B level players, but has not been able to develop and A level talent. Early first rounders give the best opportunity to acquire elite level talent, making us competitive with other teams in the same situation. - PrinceLH
Exactly.
Hence why tanking next year would do wonders for this team going forward. MacKinnon as or 1C in 3 years. |

Pre-salary cap. Teams could buy what they needed to compete. See Leafs, Flyers, Rangers, Red Wings, back then. - PrinceLH
The Ducks won in 2007. 2003 was the draft year when Getzlaf and Perry were taken. |

Ryan wasn't on the Cup winning team.
So some cup winners used later draft picks to win. That validates the idea of trying to win and building via trade, UFA and the draft, doesn't it? Burke already traded away your lottery pick for Kessel. You're now a team that is trying to win. Whether you think it's the best way or not, your GM is going to try to build a winner without tanking. - micah555
And he has been proven incorrect. He miscalculated his roster, over-estimating their ability. He compounded this, by making the Kessel deal. I just don't see the grit that is needed for this team to proceed into a playoff spot. Who in the top 6 is capable of carrying a team into the playoffs? This is why Carlyle was brought in, to change the direction of this team. It shouldn't have taken 4 years to realize this mistake. Wilson should have been gone, a year ago and the team should have been reformulated and moving forward. We are now just starting the rebuild, as of today. Burke must now embrace this idea and move forward. |

Yes, the best draft since 1979, when all of the 1st rounders made the NHL. |

My point was that he seemed to be saying the Duck won pre-salary cap. They didn't, they won in 2007. |

I'm not going to debate the merits of all that with you. I'll just say I'm fairly certain Burke has not learned that lesson and is going to proceed with his plan to make the playoffs this year. Had he not dealt for Kessel, none of this wouldn't be an issue. |

Many of those players were acquired pre lockout. They had already made the finals, losing to New Jersey. Giguare was already there, then they used UFA's to get to the point of winning. |

Bye bye Komi!
Edit: Burke apparently also finished a lengthy conversation with Chiarelli. I wonder if Burke found out Thomas is willing to play for Leafs if traded, and is now using that as leverage in a Luongo deal? |

To put it within the context of what we were talking about, they did it within a salary cap. They weren't a big market team and they didn't buy their talent. The 2003 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were a very different team to the 2007 Ducks. Suggesting their 2007 win had anything to do with pre-lockout economics is very wrong. They had some very good players drafted in the later half of the 1st round and Burke made some great trades (especially trading Federov and his terrible contract for a bargain in Beauchimen).
EDIT: Here is the 2003 Ducks. Kariya, Sykora, Rucchin, Oates, Ozolinsh, Vishnevski, Cullen. Very different line up.

Sure it did. Many of those contracts, like Prongers, where pre-salary cap deals. |

I fail to see what relevance when the deal was signed has. Pre-cap deals would be more likely to be detrimental, wouldn't they? Beyond which, if it isn't Anaheim signing the deals, it doesn't affect how they acquired the talent.
Besides which Pronger signed his deal with Edmonton in 2005, after the lockout. |

Trades are always a gamble. Burke has a good record for sure, but you can't win 'em all (cough, Kessel, cough). Some players get better when you get them and some get worse. A lot of time you are trading for potential. |
