Oh, ic....so while other teams are getting better...we should just get worse. Why get better too?...Gotcha. - noename09
Luongo isn't getting us better........he's holding up the ability of this team to manage their salary cap and also keeping us from drafting better prospects. |

For the record, I like Luongo.
I just see this as Bryan McCabe, part II.
The press and fans and the rest of the league decided that Bryan McCabe was the worst player in the history of the game.
Why?
Because he was making a little bit more money than he should (not his fault), and he shot one puck into his own net while trying to clear it.
So not only was he a terrible player, but he was also a terrible person for having the audacity to suggest that he wanted to stay in Toronto (which I found doubly funny - he asked for and was given a NTC as part of his contract negotiations, and perhaps more importantly, if I was a Toronto Maple Leaf, I would never, ever accept a trade).
So in the end, we were "forced" to trade him to the Panthers for a bag of pucks and broken hockey stick named Van Ryn.
And all McCabe did in Florida was continue to put up points, while providing enough veteran leadership that they named him captain.
Luongo is done in Vancouver. It's stupid, but there you have it.
I'm just hoping we can benefit. - Atomic Wedgie
I don't think there is a parallel. McCabe made too much. Luongo is fairly paid and the Canucks are a winning team. I don't think the relationship is as sour as all that. |

gotcha.
horrible tender that Luongo is....maybe for once people should stop judging the freakng guy on his contract and rather what he can bring the team for a few solid years.
hes got a retirement contract FFS |

And next season we will be failing for a reason - to DRAFT our OWN FRANCHISE 1C in MACKINNON. |

Nah, if Burke can land Luongo, a legit starting goalie in the league, for a fair price given his contract...he wont because that will stop us from finishing 12th...playoffs are pointless if you cant win the cup.
Win the cup or tank...thats what I always say. - noename09
No, it's perpetual not being good enough to compete. Not bad enough for a decent star player, not good enough to make the playoffs. See: Buffalo Bills of the NFL. |

if theres a way to guarantee we place lower than 12th without Luongo, im all for it.
BUT IM WILLING TO BET we end up around 10th without Luongo.

Here's what's going to happen this off season.
Prob gonna get Luongo
Top six will be more or less the same with Bozak being our #1C again
Burke rebuilds our bottom six through FA which he can actually do since there is a selection of big tough gritty bottom six players in FA
Adds 1 veteran shut down dman through FA as well that can stabilize all the youth back there.
Goal scoring wasn't our problem last year. Keep the puck out was so if we can accomplish those modest goals. I think everybody will get what they want, a 6-8th place finish and another 10-12 draft pick.
Yay......... |

its crazy how hes turned into a Gustavsson overnight because of his contract!?....yikes!!....Toronto hasnt had a LEGIT goalie in over ten years, and now that one can be acquired for less than his value....we say no...we would rather keep losing and placing 10th. Its better on our players that way.

Yeah, retirement contracts.....like Brian Leetch, Phil Housley, Ron Francis and the list goes on. Come to Toronto, spend your golden years in the country club that is known as the ACC. No wonder that players like Sundin, Tucker, McCabe and Kaberle didn't want to leave. |

That is the stupidity of a 10 year contract. Ask Philly, because they're on the same hook, but it'll take either a buyout or giving up of assets, to get rid of such a ball and shackles around the ankles of the franchise. It's insanity that haunts a franchise long term. - PrinceLH
Again, Luongo had a good season (.919 S%, 2.41 GAA). Bryzgalov was worse for more money (.909 S%, 2.48 GAA) and looked awful in the playoffs. Playoffs didn't go great for Lu or Vancouver, but he was the best Canuck player in the 2 games he started.
Again, I'd be fine with keeping him. I don't think his contract is unreasonable or detrimental to the team if he keeps playing like he did last year. There is a big difference between a long contract on an under performing player and a long deal on a guy earning his keep. |
