Burke didnt draft in the first round that year, he got a highly skilled player in Kessel who cost us two first rounders. Its done. Why bother continuously bringing it up? Had Burke drafted Seguin and Hamilton are we so sure Seguin would haev flourished as he did on a strong, insulated team like Boston, or be another Kadri struggling to make the roster?
Lets not play the grass is greener, that game is no fun. Our grass may not be as green, but we've been watering it a lot lately and paying close attention to its needs and it will get there soon...be patient. - noename09

IF we didnt do the Kessel trade, would people be so sure that we would be drafting Seguin in the first place?
For all we know, a separate deal could have been made - jbold
nope, crystal ball says we draft Seguin and Hamilton and they are BEASTS with our not-so-welcoming to prospects team.

I always chuckle about that when Leafs fans lament the fact "we traded away Scott Niedermayer for Tom Kurvers."
C'mon, you know we would have drafted Alex Stojanov....

just a quick question
how many years do you believe it should take a prospect to reach the NHL?
also.. side note.. seguin was only brought up to the nhl in his rookie year because boston didnt want him playing in junior since he was too good for the league but they couldnt put him in the ahl because he wasnt 20
so, for a typical pick.. how many years? - Dozzer
I think it takes 3 years for a guy who has been trained properly and 4 for a guy who has the skill but has bad habbits or doesn't have a all around game. |

Not at all, I like them all as prospects, but we've all liked a whole host of other prospects, that did look like good prospects at the time.... The thing is, until they actually come to the NHL, and show their stuff, they can't be used as examples of good drafting.
Furthermore, attributing the drafting to the GM isn't all that smart either, since he goes by his scouts... And Toronto has had good scouts for a long time, just not good picks. - Schenn-Sational!
nothing i dont disagree with.. and the bolded.. more than fair, however, using the same argument i can say that you cant say the drafting record is poor either
so until they prove to be nhl busts or nhl regulars the jury is still out
so not good or bad.... just in a holding pattern |

He wants Miracle Grow - JIMI-JAMES
DAMN, that would have been solid to add!!
- There is no miracle grow for this team, it costs too much and dosnt guarantee sucess. It means you may have less money to put into other needs for the lawn and you may not be able to water as much. It could cause holes in your lawn, thus the best route is to slowly grow your own grass, planting your own seeds, watering them and let them grow!
Thanks Jimi! |

No, he makes a valid point, even if he didnt articulate it well... This far, with the Leafs, his draft record isn't great. Its not that he's a bad drafter(again, its the scouts that do the drafting) its that the only pick he had that could have generated an NHL regular by now, he traded away. |

Colborne wasn't ready last year. His stats don't look too bad, but if you remember him actually playing, he was overwhelmed.
It was better he spent the season in the A.
It was the right move. - Atomic Wedgie
not necessarily disagreeing with your evaluation - just sayin' that Tim Connolly clearly "wasn't the answer", and that his presence prevented JoeC (perhaps others to your point) from utilizing that roster spot. |

That's quite the defeatist attitude. Leafs have a few prospects on the verge of playing in the NHL, and a few more 1 year away. The bigger problem is the guys currently on the team taking their spots have contracts bigger than what their worth and we cannot get rid of them until their contracts are over (barring a trade). |

Exactly, we have to wait and see. With thr Leafs, his draft record is... Neutral. |

Who cares, he had a bit of potential and I feel the Leafs should have signed him, but he'll be drafted very late considering his age. Good luck to him wherever he goes. |

EXACTLY....and hes been trading beers to the neighbors for slightly better seeds. hes also using rain barrels to water the lawn...hes saving up for a big purchase of fertilizer soon, not sure which brand name to go with tho....Staal or Parise...tough decision....he thinks he can snag some Luongo at the discount store though that will help in the winter months |

yeah, i can stick with that..
i wont say its good, and i wont say its bad..
now, out of curiousity, by what age should a draft pick make the NHL.. i realize that its different from player to player.. but say a range? 23-25 ish typically?

BUT, he replaced those assets, with an NHL'er (Kessel) Gardiner (Who is also essentially a full time NHL'er) and Colbourne... So, is he replaced those assets, is his asset management bad? Cuz, it seems to me, if he was bad at asset management he would have never replaced them to begin with... Not to mention...
Kessel /Seguin
Gardiner/Hamilton
Colbourne/Knight
I don't know if Knight is a winger, but if he is, he replcaed those assets position for postition... |
