as much as it sucks i honestly really do think staal wants out. and this whole linkage to carolina BS really freakin hamstrings the team as to getting value back to him. i cant see why carolina would move the farm if he will sign there next year. at the same time, i cant see why another team would move a TON for him for one year. dont get me wrong, if gaustad as a rental nets a first, im sure shero could get something decent for staal. but this mega value return just likely is not there with the situation the way it is, and it really sucks because staal is a tremendous asset that is going to be lost within a year.

well you gotta look at it from other team's perspective.

a team like CAR can trade the assets now and hopefully get him under contract. if he goes out and score 70 points and could have gotten a lot more money, it would be a good move for them. plus, what happens if someone like TOR makes an all out move for him and he decides to go there? plus, i think Rutherford is under pressure from management and also the fact that sutter would be unneeded.

another team could see it as 1 year to sell staal to sign with them. teams on the fringe could trade for him, hopefully do well and convince him to sign.

no matter what, staal lost some value tonight though.
