That doesn't make so much sense actually. PITT will get tons of offers for him either way, and and least one of them will be an over payment. For example, let's say it's a team like BUF, who has put HUGE pressure on themselves to make the playoffs and an owner willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish that.

Say they offer something like #12 + Arima + Foligno/McNabb + conditional 1st if Staal resigns. PITT gets this return no matter what. Now BUF plays Staal #1 C with Vanek and Pomminville, PP time/etc, everything he wants. Likely he succeeds in such an arena. Given the small number of changes to the current roster (+other off season moves) BUF becomes a legit playoff team (more so than CAR). Staal just may find he likes that situation in BUF, especially if Pegula (known for getting what he wants) offers him an essential blank cheque.

This is a VERY realistic scenario that would be the end of any hope CAR has to sign him in the off season. Staal gets everything he wants, he can even decide to make it a 3-5 year deal if he wants and then decide whether to go to CAR at that point. It's up to him...

This is the biggest risk CAR has, and it's very realistic.

You really just don't get it, do you? This really isn't too difficult.

Staal says he refuses to sign an extension unless he's traded to Carolina. No team in the league is going to give up ANYTHING substantial when they know they will only have him for one year. He is essentially lowering his trade value to the point where the Pens are better off holding him till the end of the year and going for another cup with him. If you were the Sabres GM, would you trade anything substantial for him when you know he might not re-sign at the end of the year? What would you trade for 1 year of Staal, and "hopefully" more.

You keep talking about #12 + Arima + Foligno/McNabb + conditional 1st if Staal resigns, where a more likely offer is Armia and a 2nd, OR the 12th overall alone.

Why would Buffalo over that when they know there is a risk of him walking? In your mind, you think that the Pens can re-sign him, then trade him to a team like Buffalo for a substantial return. You are wrong however, as Staal wont re-sign unless he's being traded to Carolina, at which point Carolina knows Staal is coming to their team, and therefore wont give up anything substantial for him.

So the Pens have a couple option:

1) Keep him till the end of the year, and let him go.
2) Sign/trade him to Carolina, at which point Carolina won't give up any substantial assets.
3) Trade him to another team like Buffalo, which wouldn't give up anything substantial due to the risk of Staal not re-signing at the end of the year.

This really isn't a difficult concept. This is standard for all players with one year left on a contract... I honestly can't figure out how your mind has led you to the conclusions you've mentioned in your previous posts.

It's mind-boggling.

Should be a good day....
I'm expecting Darcy makes a couple moves

Today and tomorrow are very important, IMO...
If we want a realistic shot at getting Parise (which I am 100% for)...
Then we need to make an impressive move or two so that he feels we are a legit contender if he were to come here

Drew Stafford, u better be on the phone doing some recruiting!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD morning...

I am ready to see the dominoes today...

Got my Sabres polo on for work today... I am working from home this afternoon.. should be a GREAT night!

Hoping that we do atleast 1 trade for a top 6 C or F.. don't know who.. but hoping we get at least one trade with all of our hype leading up to this. I still see Stastny as the most likely though.

But he can finish. And he could allow Hodson and Ennis to develop a little more.

I'm thinking we get someone along the lines of a Dave Bolland rather some high end center, because as we all know you can never have enough 3rd line players.

Nobody seemed to want him before, so I guess we will get picks back so that gives Darcy more amo to trade the 12th and or the 21st for a center.

We don't know if it has been "no body has wanted Roy" or if it is "no body wants to pay Darcy's price for Roy"

there is a big difference...

for just an additonal 100K I would rather have Thornton than Marleau.. but I think they will want to trade Marleau before Joe..

I really can't decide if I think Howson will come down to what he has been offered or if he will be stubborn and keep his high demand...

SJ's Clowe, Pavelski, Demars, and a 1st sounds like the best to me so far.

If I remember right... Howson did come down on his demand for Jeff Carter.
