Is it common for negotiations with star players to only begin starting a week and a half or so before FA begins?

I don't think anything about the NJDs season has been common. Look at the turmoil that the owner is experiencing and then you have the on ice success. I would think a captain on a competing team would either be signed very early or very late. Because of the situation with the owner very early wasn't an option.

My question is how do Devils plan see their owner's situation panning out?

You'd think that if Parise and NJ really wanted each other that badly this would have been taken care of. And usually a franchise player would be more important than exit interviews...

Parise was open to talking contract but Lamoriello never talks contract during the season. You're argument is stupid and pointless. We kow a lot more about Lou and the Devils, I believe Brodeur was the only one to have signed an extensions during a season. By the way, have you ever been to New Jersey outside ofNewark? Probably not, and just so you know it is nice place to live with a lot of nice suburbs. Holik, Arnott, and all the other players don't want to come back to New Jersey because it's a "poophole," I believe an ex-Devil had told Gomez not to leave NJ because he would regret it.

but look at lou's principles, no contract talks during the season so it wasnt going to be done then, and your not going to talk contract the next day or 2 after the finals

lou still has a good amount of time to get it done, there are other parts of the business that needs to be done and those "deadlines" come before july 1st

What would the agent or the GM have to gain by saying contract talks haven't started? They said they are going to talk informally at the draft and then go from there.

Why does anybody think this rumor is true? Parise said he wanted to be traded to a contender, not a lotto candidate.

These fans of other teams coming in here and knowing substantially more about our own team and its inner workings...wow, it's really depressing. I thought for sure I was an informed NJ Devil fan. How sad to find out this isn't so!

And to come to learn that Lou Lams and Wade Arnott are liars?! And Todd Cordell uses no factual information in his blogs and is nothing more than a speculator and charlatan?!

But the fans of other teams, they are NOT! They are the shepherds of truth! Ask them fellow Devils fans! For they obviously know more about NJ, the Devils, and the NHL than our lowly fan base could ever even dream to learn!

Clearly NJ is a horrific franchise and no one would ever want to play there.

That's what I'm saying. Why would the Devils trade their Captain before even attempting to re-sign him? Literally makes zero sense. Buying a dolphin and putting it in your swimming pool makes more sense.

Cordell, you contradict your self when you say Devils will resign Parise, but then you go on to say he wont sign if the price is too high for the Devils?

Hate to break it to you but Parise will get close to 8-10 (14 is the highest for any player) a year if Devils are in debt, how do you expect the team to sign him? On a hometown discount?

Cinncinati Reds Joey Votto resigned with a discount and Joe Mauer of Minnesota Twins resigned for a discount. 2 stupid choices, those teams arent going anywhere for a very long time. Even if this trade was true I doubt anyone would know about it until it's official. The Devils and the Avs are two of the most secretive franchises out there. I doubt anyone, other than head office staff, know what is really going on with Parise.

I won't quibble with NJ's earnestness to sign him or Zack's loyalty.

However, I think the likelihood of his signing with a team that trades for his rights depends on the team and what they offer him.

Parise will not sign anywhere before July 1st. Why would he allow himself to get this close to free agency and not at least see what kind of offers pour in? I'm not saying he absolutely wouldn't re-sign with NJ, but let's face it, anyone in his shoes would be at least a little bit curious about what kind of offers he'll get.
