Actually, IMO, hanging onto their youth is what won them the cup.
- funmaster18

Nash- 27
Ryan- 25

These guys would become part of the core if they were to be acquired.

We have been trying for going on 38 years.. every time we have young players with potential it seems like we end up sacrificing them for the big fish...

I want that to change!

- jak521

The Flyers have the best winning percentage then any other hockey club except Montreal. We have been in a position to win more then anyone else. It takes stars aligning to win the cup, and it just hasn't happened yet. As long as they keep putting themsleves in the right spot they will win it eventually. 1 way to not win is try a rebuild. Plus IMO trading a 23 YO for a 25 YO or 27 YO is really not sacrificing youth...

Yep, kept their young core players with potential and it worked out for them.
- funmaster18

worked for them, boston, chicago, pittsburgh, detroit...

I think you're undervaluing the potential of a Nash/Ryan-G combo.
- LeachHextall27

There is also the potential that the pair doesnt click.

I also think a lot of people are unrealistic in the expectations of a 30 point statistical increase for Ryan/Nash, simply by playing with G.

That's true for every player though.

Still, there's a difference between actively seeking to move a player and answering calls from teams interested in a player.

My issue is I believe the Flyers are doing the calling to Columbus and Anaheim.

Just to clarify, I completely understand the opinions against these moves. They make sense. However, I feel as though the investment is worth it so long as Jake, Schenn, and Couts are held onto.

I'd prefer a franchise d-man, but other than Weber, who is out there that's a legitimate possibility??

Funny, because it seems to me like they built around their youth...

Coulda traded away any of Brown, Kopitar, Doughty, Quick... but they didnt.. They added certain pieces.. but kept the core intact..

- jak521

Same can be said for giroux, couts, and schenn. They can be the core while the flyers adda guy like nash or ryan

They seemed to like Voracek on the point a lot last year. He has the body type to be a better net presence in front of the net instead of Simmonds, but does he really have the desire? I think the issue with JVR is not the ability, but the willingness to continually use his size to his advantage.
- ravishingone

I'm a big fan of your posts. But I disagree with you on this one. Don't see Voracek as viable in front of the net as ompared to Simmonds. Simmonds loves the fight. It is glorious to watch him grab some of those rebounds in front of the net with his long reach and jam it in.

Voracek is more of a Forsberg player to me - maybe more speed but less puck control. Clearly not the same level, but I can see him as that type of creative presence on the ice. Would be neat to see him and JVR grow together - both have speed and JVR can hopefully harness that power.

In summary, I want to avoid a Rude Awakening, but still must speak the truth according to me.

Yet the Devils have won how many cups over the past 20 years.. what about the Pens? What about every other team that has a cup to their name since 1975?

The problem (especially with Nash) is that you end up sacrificing youth when it comes time to sign them and you cant...

Agreed.

However, let's not forget that Nash has won a Richard trophy and has multiple high 70+ pt seasons under his belt, all while being the only legitimate threat on his entire team's O.

People are worried about trading youth for guys like Nash and Ryan. While I would like to see what JVR eventually becomes in a Flyers uniform, I can understand Homer wanting to get someone more established. I think the important thing, not just having young guy, but having them develop at the same time. IMO JVR and Voracek still in 2-3 years before they become the top of thier games... Well Giroux is ready now, and I can understand that Homer would want to put guys that are also ready now on the ice with him.

The main issue of looking at that is the team hasn't been patient enough.

They say Schenn could develop into a Mike Richards player (personally I think more Dustin Brown).

I think JVR could develop in to a Bobby Ryan player. For better or worse.
Not 100% well rounded but good at certain thinngs (scoring, drive net, etc.)

Thats sort of my point. If you have a player who is similar to Nash and Ryan production wise like JvR why would you be calling these teams to get one of those players? Everyone knows they have to give JvR up in return to get one of those guys.

I like Schultz a great deal. However, I believe Homer & Snider want to shoot for the Cup next season (when don't they??). As we all know, they aren't patient men. I see them, at least trying, to pull off a big move that will help both in the short and long term.

Rick Nash has made it to 70 points exactly 1 time in his 9 year career.

He is a 30+,30+ guy.. which is exactly what I think JvR has the potential to be (yet at nearly half the hit).

He certainly does have that potential, no question about it. Obviously the Flyers are hesitant to think he's going to reach it though.

Schenn has more o-skill than either Brown or Richie IMO. He should be a better offensive player. We'll see about defense.
