Pens have 14 back to backs, and they have ZERO Saturday night home games.
- Gunner Staal

ZERO? Ownership has to be pissed about that.

They probably requested a particular day instead. We used to have very few Saturday home games, like 1 or 2 max, because ownership wanted the Friday night home games.

I don't remember the night before the draft to be that active. I bet stuff will go down tomorrow across the league. Most draft time trades happen on the actual first day of the draft though. I think you'll be safe while on your plane ride. I don't think you'll miss anything.

I know Howson said he wanted the Nash thing done before the draft day so that he can focus on that day alone..

He'll manage to screw up something, so it doesn't really matter.

The problem is what he wants and what other GMs may want to do could be 2 completely different things. I could end up being completely wrong, but I don't remember a whole lot going down the night before the draft in recent years. Draft day has been busy, but not the night before.

i would think teams would be focusing more on their draft charts and pinning down what their needs and value of players are.. I bet it could completely mess with some teams if a bunch of trades happened involving picks and players today or tonight though

I think the only reason there is any talk is the 2 first rounds picks we have.

Here's my thoughts on where Darcy's head is

He's trying to trade Roy for a early to middle 2nd rounder.

That leaves us with 2 firsts and 3 2nds.

Trying to package the 2 1sts in a weak draft class for Thornton, Getzlaf, Nash, Ryan
whoever he can grab that is a top line player

He then trades back into the late first round to grab someone who falls using the 3 2nds

- sbroads24

from what darcy has said it doesn't seem like getz would fit since he needs to be resigned after next year. sounds like they are looking for someone with multiple years left. could we get thornton for players + that second 1st rounder? i would like to see them trade for joe and draft a center with the 12.

Very true...

What were some trades that went down at last years draft?

On Ryan Miller

Miller will also not be traded unless the return is overwhelming....

Carter and Richards were dealt the day before the draft. Liles went to Toronto on draft Friday. Campbell went to Floriday on draft Saturday and I think that's when the Regehr deal was finally done.

And of course the small deals that happen throughout the draft for picks, prospects and role players

Right after there were some notables. Smyth back to Edmonton, Ehrhoff twice, Wiz to CBus, and I think Kopecky was right around draft time.

You forgot about the Setoguchi trade as well. Nothing even happened on draft day until pretty late in the day. And it was a lot more player movement than it was pick movement.

Thanks for posting that... you know whats so funny with most articles that "grade" the draft (not this one in particular) but I always notice that they give letters sort of based on position. So edmonton would get an A+ and then LA would get a D... they never seem to want to take into consideration how they drafted based on their position.

It just seems silly to me... plus... you wouldn't even know how successful the draft was for a team until at least a few years later.

Paul "Gausted" for Joe Pavelski.

Tim "Connelly", Brad "Boyce", Chris Butler for Mikko Koivu, Brent Burns and a 2nd.

Paul "Gausted" and MA Gragnani for Ryan Kesler.

Yes, these were actual proposed trades by Rico.

There are so many factors that play into it I don't know how you can grade it in the first place. You can't compare 2 teams drafts because you don't even know what their strategy was. Were they drafting based on organiztional need? Were they drafting based on best player available? Each team brings in different guys a lot of the time. Maybe they didn't like what a particular player had to say. The scouts don't all see the same games and maybe saw something in a player the day they were there. It just seems silly.

I really only posted that because of the trade info.

And Montador's rights went to Chicago. Didn't Versteeg get traded too?

Those might have happened the next day or something. The article just has what happened on the first day of the draft.
