They had players that could play the PK role, Cowen, Kuba, Phillips, Gonchar, Carkner/Gilroy can do that role better than him. It's just a waste to play him there, because he brings it offensively. - _Zippy_
Gilroy, no. Carkner and Gonchar, debatable. But if you're going to argue that he wasn't good enough to play on the PK defensively, doesn't that make him fairly one dimensional? Shea Weber played in all situations, was the best on the other side of the ice, and still put up 49 points, which was 5th highest for a defensman. |

Not that he isn't good enough. But why use him there...
I was hoping Henrique would win. |

Why use Parise on the PK? You use the players that give you the best chance to win. When you're shorthanded, you want the players that will give you the best chance to kill it off. When you're on the powerplay, you want the players that will give you the best chance to score. |

Yeah, well in that case, Parise was a better option than some of the other players. Who else were we to play there. The Sens had other better options for the PK, and it allowed Karlsson to play a lot of even strength time, something he is better at. |

Actually the argument could be made with Kovy. He is defensively reponsible enough to PK but generally only gets the last shift going back to even strength because we have better options |

The sens had 3 better options, I wouldn't call Carkner, Gonchar, and especially Gilroy better options. Looking ahead to next year, if most of our players will be retained, Henrique, Zubrus, Elias, JJ, Gio, Carter could all be given PK time and do good, but Parise will probably still get it because he gives us the best chance to kill it off. |

But why use him there. Why waste his offensive talents there?
The Kovalchuk comparison is probably best. Why waste Kovalchuk's offense on the PK and similarly why waste Karlsson's offense on the PK? |

I'm not sure where you're going with this zippy.
This season, I've already said it doesn't make sense for EK to play the PK. There forwards weren't good enough to sustain enough pressure. Once they fill out, they won't need EK as much to sustain their pressure, and he'll give them a better chance to win on the PK.
Why would Nashille was Weber's defensive ability by playing him on the PP? Chara on the PP? Doughty on the PK? Campbell on the PK? Letang on the PK? Datsyuk on the PK and in a defensive role? Because it gives the team the best chance to win. Back in the day Yzerman was a dominant offensive force, and wasn't winning anything. They refined his role, gave him more defensive responsibility, and thus the Red Wings run of cups began. Sometimes you have to sacrifice points for the overall goal. |
