Would you trade a cuP this year with Staal and missing playoffs (which won't happen) for 5 years of top 4 seeding and losing 1st round? Carolina was terrible last year with these awesome players in the line up. Staal is a stud by far best player in the deal and increases our cup chances this season. 3rd line centers can be found and we are loaded with d prospects close to the NHL. Not a chance in hell of falk being in the top pairing. 44 & 58 got that locked up.

So am I to understand this proposed deal is Staal and Martin for Sutter, Faulk and the #8? If so pull the trigger on that Ray and don't look back. Sutter is a perfect #3C and Faulk looks to be a keeper, I think he's going to be very good.

I have my doubts Carolina would do this as it's being proposed.

The deal i want to see done is this, and it's been nowhere, just sounds logical:

Martin and a conditional 2013 2nd round pick to Minny for Clutterbuck (condition on whether Clutterbuck signs extention.)

- cap1681

Very much into that. Always been a fan of Clutterbuck.

Minnesota, hell anyone, isn't going to take Martin's salary AND give you a good player straight up. Martin is a liability in the cap world, finding someone to take him for a year old newspaper is a win for the Penguins. That's why I'm skeptical of this Canes rumour.

I doubt the deal would go through either but it still sounds nice lol. I think that a team that needs to take on some salary and is in need of a puck moving dman could be interested though.

Funny how when Martin first came we felt fairly justified in his high salary because he was an elite level defenseman. What the heck happened?

The 'secret plans' of the Carolina organization:

B. Schenn - J. Staal - E. Staal

M. Staal - L. Schenn

Well.... I believe the biggest problem is he's a horrible fit for Bylsma system. For whatever reason, Martin and Bylsma seems to think he's the next Paul Coffey......unfortunately, he only has Coffey's defensive abilities.

Really, the bottom line is the guy is used to a disciplined defensive system (I'm curios how many times he dared to join the rush in Jersey). I'm positive if he gets back to that game, he'll resume his competent career.

If I were Martin, I'd think real hard about excepting a trade to any decent team. This past year has all but ruined his reputation.

I decided to stop making deals bc u yell at me

But someone takes martin from us and we get a top 10 pick for staal im happy

- nh4442

You shouldn't be just happy with a top 10 pick for Staal. That would be a pathetic return.

I was a big fan of Martin and his 5mill salary in year 1. He took many steps backwards this year.

I can't see them both giving up Faulk and taking on Martin, but Carolina and the Pens are a good fit - Sutter could fill the 3rd line role and a #8 pick might not be as "untouchable" as some higher picks.

Sutter + 8th + _____ for Staal (+ ___??) could be the start of a reasonable deal for both sides.

We shouldn't give plus in that deal.

Then again, Clouts is saying Carolina is thinking of trading its first rounder for Sam Gagner. He isn't worth that.

I put your plus in brackets because it would depend on the 3rd Carolina asset. If it were something minor, obviously Pittsburgh wouldn't need to add anything.

As for the deal cloutier mentioned, he specifically sourced Jeff Marek from oilers now. Usually you're a little more attentive!

id say pens throw in a 2nd rounder to make it possible. Carolina has a bunch of cap space so replacing martin for faulk isnt that far fetched. Faulk is still considered a prospect and martin only had one bad year and everyone knows martin and the pens system isnt working

You think Goligoski was the best player in the Neal trade?
- cap1681

At the time yes, high premium on good puck moving d men. Plus go-go has been very good for Dallas, that would have been a wash that deal if it wasn't for Nisk.

We play a system that brings out all of martins foibles rather than strengths, it's either change the system (which needs to happen for playoff wins) or trade the player, most likely? Not sure.

Well, the key to any deal is to not "fall in love with players". The trades must be made for good reasons (cap, chemistry, age, need, etc) and the more I look at the Staal situation, the more I think that a deal along the lines of what Carolina would offer would be very good.

Staal + X <-> 8th (Faksa?!) + Sutter (would fit in great at 3rd line C) + Y

Not sure who the X-Y would be, but you know the Pens need to be blown away by the trade to accept it as they aren't yet forced into a deal. So far this isn't totally blowing me away...but it's getting there. While Faulk has a lot of potential, I just don't see him fitting in on the team, there must be something else to it. Let's say it's Y=Faulk, X=Lovejoy (or prospect like Strait).

A nice number of teams would be more than interested to bid on Faulk. Could fetch a good young winger + D. San Jose could be a nice trade partner:

Murray + Clowe + 3rd in 2013 <-> Faulk + Tangradi?

Crosby - Clowe - Dupuis
Malkin - Kunitz - Neal
Sutter - Kennedy - Cooke
Vitale - LW - Adams

Letang - Orpik
Martin - Murray
Niskanen - Michalek
(+D to trade, hopefully Martin)

+ we have Faksa - or whoever we select at 8. I think the team is much better under this scenario, or one like it, from a variety of standpoints (fiscally, prospect-wise, current chances to win). Lots of teams would have interest in Faulk, so I'd be confident in getting what we need (physical D + big gritty winger with some scoring punch).
