i really dont want to see staal go, but i really do think he will. he is just leaving too much on the table in many areas if he stays. that being said, short of edmonton moving eberle (which they wouldnt) i really dont see the pens getting a better offer than this one. (i dont honestly even think carolina would give up this much) it would hurt to see staal go, but if shero feels he cant sign him i would pull the trigger on this one.

Sutter is the perfect replacement for Staal, maybe the next best to Bolland. If you look at those player charts one person posted earlier, he gets the same quality of competition plus more defensive zone starts. Your underestimating Faulk as well, and he is better than any prospect you have and Niskanen. You get the 8th overall which is a very good pick and gives you a blue chip prospect. You can package those pretty good prospects for a top 4 bruiser and still have room to sign a top 6 winger. This is a fantastic deal for the pens.

I agree with you on Sutter, but not Faulk. Faulk is good, but i think Morrow and Harrington have the potential to be better. Especially Morrow.

Only difference is in those cases he was trading for the best player (maybe less so for Kunitz). In this situation he is trading the best player. Teams will overpay, but I don't think as much as the trade suggested.

You think Goligoski was the best player in the Neal trade?

It's a good deal but, I'm excited to see us roll out 87, 71 & 11 all healthy for one whole season.

Sutter is thought very highly of in CAR. very good young leader. he would do very well here.

Those charts are really interesting, as it does indicate who gets coddled a bit. In fact, they've been very useful in demonstrating why certain guys (like Horcoff on our team) are treated unfairly by fans.

It's a risk i'll take. Besides, I believe we have a better chance winning it if we keep Staal.

We'll have to agree to disagree then, but from what I've seen of Faulk, he's a stud and Morrow is yet to play in the NHL. There's still a lot more risk in him.

certainly not a risk i'd be willing to take. we are going to have a good chance to win whether we have sutter or staal as our #3 center.

Yes.

And this team has a much better chance to win with Staal, than any immediate replacement that I've seen tossed around. I'll take that risk.

Cheaper replacement for Staal that more naturally fits in with the 3rd line role, top rookie with a really high ceiling, + #8 overall, and taking Martin? I don't know how much better this trade could be.

I honestly think you are more scary with the trade proposed, obviously as long as you still pick up the top 4 bruiser and a top 6 winger.

So much stuff to do in the Burgh, Pirates games all week, if you're in to art, the Warhol museum and the Matress Factory are awesome, take the incline up to Mt Washington (best view of the city), tons of good restaurants to eat at. Just to name a few. You'll be fine.
- cap1681

This and a Pirates game are the best bets during the Summer IMO (not a 'Burgher, obviously, but have spent some time there).

It's easy to get a good return when 29 other teams want him too. We will get a nice return if it goes down unless some stooge from Hockeybuzz becomes a GM. Post of the day is I wouldn't do Staal for the # 8 pick!!! OK buddy
- lloyd095

Name the last rental that was traded for a top-10 Draft pick.

Nobody is giving up 7 years of a player like Teravainen, Grigorenko, or Reinhart for 1 year of J. Staal. He isn't that good.

You and i disagree then. I love what Staal brings to this team, but i think Sutter could be a admirable replacement, plus getting other pieces (inlcuding the cap room to sign other players) sets the Pens up to compete for the next 4-5+ years.

i am not a fan of staal on the 3rd line. while he was trying to find his offensive game, his defensive game was his #1 thing. but now that he is starting to come into his own with offense, i think his defensive game will suffer.

Sutter is a perfect guy for Pittsburgh. Plus, if Faulk isn't needed here, maybe you ship him or Morrow/Harrington out and go after a guy like Weber or something.

i wouldnt be willing to say that there is no drop off in the teams chances from staal to sutter, but overall, given the circumstances, this is quite a haul

Yes, he is. Staal had a .8 ppg average last year as a 3rd line center, when most of his time on the ice is going against the other teams top line, also playing with the likes of Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy. You put him as a 1st or 2nd line center and put him with top 6 talent on his wings, and he will put up a lot more points. Not to mention the fact that he is one of the best penalty killers in the NHL. Trust me when i say i would most like the Penguins keep him long term, but i dont see that happening.

yeah. from what ive seen this faulk is a keeper. i know the pens have a lot of quality d in the pipeline, but you can never have enough. it provides insurance for letang should he leave or someone can be moved for value

Rental? Who says? He wants to be a top center why wouldn't he resign. It's not the trade deadline either. He's that good!!! More to hockey than just points. I wouldn't trade Staal for the #8 pick alone and most people who have followed Staal's career will agree.

Speaking of how underrated Staal really is, has anyone seen the player usage chart on Pensburgh?

http://www.pensburgh.com/...nguins-player-usage-chart

Lots of stats in play there, but as far as Staal goes, it really shows how he is put out there in the worst situations, against the top players, and still excels as far as scoring points.

Here is a big ass pdf that has charts for all of the teams.

Thanks for this. That first one is really interesting. Staal blows everyone away and this is exactly why I hope we let him play his last year out here even if we can't get him resigned.
