Soon enough, China will seem like a great place to live if that psycho keeps going.

I believe that was also the summer of Jason Allison.

Oh man, this is getting painful already.

Maybe we can talk about what Sundin or Brett Favre will do.

yessssssss, i was sad he got fired because i knew he had a good eye for talent.. to be honest, if it wasnt for the pressure to make the playoffs right away, i think we would have a very good team right now because JFJ wouldnt have felt forced to trade away his young players..

I'd love to have him back as a head scout, he's also the one who told SJ to move up to draft Couture.. and that was with our pick

- peddy-93

Heard somewhere a while ago that JFJ originally approached the MLSE board with a plan to completely gut the team and rebuild through the draft, but they shot it down and said spend what you have to sign the biggest names you can and trade what you have to get instant results, or you're out the door...it seems he was kept on quite the short leash

That was at the very, very end of the JFJ era - he basically wanted a do-over, and the board told him no, because they knew they were going to can his arse, and didn't want him leading the rebuild.

Yeah. Stupid owners basically forced JFJ to make the stupid moves. But he drafted some very good players.

they don't care because they're still making a ton of money anyway. Although, it's new owners and stuff so who knows what will happen over the next couple years.

Sigh.

Let me try this again.

There are 10 years left on Luongo's contract.

The final four have a combined total value of $7 million.

So for all intents and purposes, the Leafs can think of it as a 6 year contract, with a $7 million buy-out clause at the end of those six years.

If at the end of 6 years, Luongo is still playing at a high level, that's just great - keep him playing. Keep him on the NHL roster.

If he sucks, you bury him in the AHL - which would only be an additional $7 million dollars, spread over 4 years.

Yes, the Leafs have to honour the contract.

Nowhere in the contract does it say that Luongo has to play in the NHL for the entire duration.

Are we good?

- Atomic Wedgie

I get it, it still doesn't change the fact when/if Burke makes a trade for Luongo that it will be on the grounds of a 10 year contract. The trade will be based on what's written, not what's speculated.

It's like leasing a car. The monthly payments are set based on the downpayment and the term of the lease, not "I may or may not buy this car out after my lease expires, so on the off chance that I do buy this car out, how much can you reduce my monthly payments?"

Are we good?

New topic. Would anyone want JFJ back? Not as a GM, but as a scout?

looking back at the drafts from 05-07, JFJ made some good late round picks. He probably statistically drafted better players in the later rounds more often than any other GM during that time.

Sample

2005 7th round, Stralman
2006 2nd round, Kulemin, 4th round, Reimer and Holzer, 6th round, Stalberg and Komarov
2007 4th round Frattin, 6th round Didomenico, 7th round Gunnarsson.

JFJ was a terrible GM as the NEED TO WIN NOW attitude often lead to terrible trades like Rask for Raycroft, 1st and 2nd for Toskala, etc.

I don't believe he knew how to build a team, but he certainly knew how to draft in the later rounds when he had picks.

- ILoveLamp

Why do people always assume it is the GM who found and picked these guys all on their own? What JFJ did was listen to his scouts and picked the players they had on their list.

Only 21 years old. When he and the Leafs make the playoffs, he'll be growing epic beards. Just thought I'd point that out. I have really nothing to add to the current topic of conversation.

GM's scout a lot as well though. Definitely not as much as the scouts but they still watch these kids play many times. Isn't JFJ the head of player development or the head of scouting for the Sharks? I know at one point he had some sort of title, he wasn't just a scout.
