Wrong

If a trade takes place, it will be based on Luongo's full contract which ultimately decreases his overall value.

Unless the Leafs have something in writing from Vancouver and/or Luongo, it will remain a 10 year contract and will be treated as such.

- As_I_See_It

The cap hit drops off sharply later on though. By then, even though the cap is rumored to drop the coming season, its not at all unreasonable to assume the cap will have gone up by then.

With respect ...I think you guys need to allow for some outside the box thinking here.

Management, players, and agents talk ....all the time. That contract was designed the way it was for the purpose of circumventing the Cap. Nobody knows that better then BB. Those last 3 years are nothing short of a joke ...a loophole in the pre-Kovalchuk CBA. The core of the contract was negotiated and those xtra 3 or 4 yrs tacked on to bring the Cap Hit down. We all know this ....

If Lou and his NTC have a destination of choice, and Gillis really wants to move Lou, you can be assured that everyone involved is quite aware of what Lou's true intentions are.

Should BB use the 10 yr issue to bring the price down? Absolutely.

But everyone in those discussions will know the last few years are BS.

disagree.. when it come to goalies.. one development spot is 50% of your development spots
- Dozzer

Not really, European goalies can spend a lot of time honing their trade overseas, CHL goalies can spend 3 more years developing where they are, and then they've got a spot in the ECHL(which is fine for goalies, not so much for skaters), and then there's always the back-up spot with the big team... Gus was behind Giggy there, Schneider is behind Luongo, Quick and Bernier, Halak behind Price... plenty of inexperienced goaltenders spend time as back-ups before becoming starters.

once again, this is assumptive in nature

remove all assumption from the equation and then look at the deal.. only then will you see it the way that NHL GMs are forced to look at contracts.

remember, these guys have bosses, and they are spending their money.. they need to justify it

- Dozzer

Sure, I also assume I'm going to enjoy a good beer after work tonight.

It's an assumption but god damn I like my chances!

Nope.

The cap hit stays at $5.33M for the entire duration of the contract. It's the salary that drops off after the 6th season in 2018-2019 and even moreso in the final 3 years of his contract. However, what I believe you're trying to say is that Luongo's $5.33M cap hit will have less and less of an impact as time goes on and the salary cap increases.

New topic. Would anyone want JFJ back? Not as a GM, but as a scout?

looking back at the drafts from 05-07, JFJ made some good late round picks. He probably statistically drafted better players in the later rounds more often than any other GM during that time.

Sample

2005 7th round, Stralman
2006 2nd round, Kulemin, 4th round, Reimer and Holzer, 6th round, Stalberg and Komarov
2007 4th round Frattin, 6th round Didomenico, 7th round Gunnarsson.

JFJ was a terrible GM as the NEED TO WIN NOW attitude often lead to terrible trades like Rask for Raycroft, 1st and 2nd for Toskala, etc.

I don't believe he knew how to build a team, but he certainly knew how to draft in the later rounds when he had picks.

Sigh.

Let me try this again.

There are 10 years left on Luongo's contract.

The final four have a combined total value of $7 million.

So for all intents and purposes, the Leafs can think of it as a 6 year contract, with a $7 million buy-out clause at the end of those six years.

If at the end of 6 years, Luongo is still playing at a high level, that's just great - keep him playing. Keep him on the NHL roster.

If he sucks, you bury him in the AHL - which would only be an additional $7 million dollars, spread over 4 years.

Yes, the Leafs have to honour the contract.

Nowhere in the contract does it say that Luongo has to play in the NHL for the entire duration.

Are we good?

It is more than that really.

It is important, in a way that can only be described with advanced theoretical physics, and the involvement of a cardinal in the Roman Catholic church.

It transcends our reality.

Gagner has the PROVEN ability to be an 8 point per game player.

Franson is a career minor leaguer.
