[quote=PootieTang]Realistically this is what will happen:

Toronto trades 5th overall + Schenn for Duchene
Toronto trades Kulemin, Colborne, MaCarthur, Percy, 2012 2nd for E. Kane
Toronto trades Komisarek, 2012 3rd, Scrivens, Damigo for Luongo
Toronto signs Schultz

Lupul Grabo Kessel

Kane Duchene Kadri

Frattin Bozak Armdog

Crabbs Steckel Brown

Gunnarsson Phaneuf

Gardiner Schultz

Liles Franson

Ex: Holzer

Luongo
Reimer

Leafs WILL make the playoffs, Burke gets an extension.
Fixed.

well said..

the market is severely limited for Lu, who else is there out there who can

A: afford the contract

B: need a 1A goalie

another thing to consider is that burke and gillis would make this trade at a professional level TOPS.. because they dont like each other very much

i cant see burke doing gillis any favours is all.. and if there does happen to be another team willing to overpay.. i also see burke not getting in the way

- Dozzer

Bingo.

Gillis isnt in a position of strength. He doesnt HAVE to trade Lu, but if he really wants to, there arent enough teams to get a bidding war to drive the price up.. Toronto seems to be the only team that is really interested, which means Gillis wont get much of a return.. im thinking Komi + 2nd + mid-level prospect

No matter what we give as our opinion, I think this will be one of the most intriguing off seasons in quite a bit, not only maybe for the Leafs but for a quite a few big name players.
- LeafMan

Well the LEafs better be active.....they need to be in the playoffs and they need big changes to occur in order for that to happen.

As far as MLSEL is concerned, there are six more years on the contract.

The final four years are for a total of $7 million in actual money - which is exactly what the Leafs spent over two years so they didn't have to look at Finger.

And if a miracle happens and Luongo is still good after six years, well, even better.

If we can get Luongo and shed some crap in the process, I'm all for it.

Throw in D'Amigo or Franson so Gillis can sell it to his fans.

- Atomic Wedgie

you know thats not true.

businesses simply do not operate that way, when they enter into a contract they need to be prepared to honour the entire thing.. you dont sign onto something "hoping" the other party will let you off the hook

thats just bad business... nothing less or more.

odds are lu does retire, however, MLSE cannot approach the trade as if they believe he will

Anyone expecting him to be a top goalie, making him worth that contract, until he's 40 is just as foolish.
- prock

no no no...

Every week the number of years he will play decreases.

I think, as of this week, it is now GUARANTEED that he will only play 4 more years. We might be down to 3 more years.

Seriously, this is really really true. He is going to walk away from 10's of millions of dollars, guaranteed!

What I meant was Luongo doesn't have a NMC - just a NTC.

After six years, they can bury him in the A (just like Finger).

Big Bob MacKenzie throws out his rankings tonight. That'll give us an hour or two to chat about something other then Luongo.

Honestly i would be down to offer sheet or trade alot of key prospects or first rounders for duchene and evander kane except kadri. I would love to see the canadian boys reunited of:

E.Kane Duchene Kadri

There is ZERO concrete evidence that Toronto is even interested. For all we know, there haven't even been any serious talks, or any talking at all.

Oh they wont approach it that way...but the last 4 years are a wash...it's 7 million.....peanuts to them.....if he plays and is bad...the minors it is...if he's good..great.

Here is the rationale both ways.

At age 39, Luongo's actual salary drops from $6.7M to $3.4M at age 40, then to $1.6M at 41, and finally $1.0M for 42 and 43.

Vancouver fans seem to think that he would have made enough $ by then that he will clearly retire by age 39...

The problem is that I rarely have ever seen a human being walk away from guaranteed $, espcially when it is in the Millions of Dollars range.

Lou is a competitor amnd will most likely play until he is physically unable (that is my guess).

Now, if he plays to this point, his cap hit will still remain at $5.6M and will cripple the team for those final 3-4 years. Is it worth it? Possibly, but not for Gardiner, Schenn, the 5th overall, and whatever other crap they seem to like to throw into the trade.

thats my problem tho.. i dont want him in the minors.. unlike finger, lu is a goalie.. not as easy to make room for four years..

you would essentially throw away a goaltending prospect in order to do that
