I would actually really like to keep both Gunnar and Franson

If Komi is shown the door this summer, then we have a defence that is actually respectable, and will improve immensely with a consistent tender.

Gardiner - Dion
Liles - Schenn
Gunnarsson - Franson

We have enough depth that in case of injury we can summon valuable replacements. Plus there's the realistic possibility that Schultz joins the Marlies for next season

- AngryWhiteMale

erp.

i felt that core was just as responsible at times for the failures last season as the goaltenders were. i wouldn't mind seeing 1 or 2 new faces in that group.

i think liles would be good to move if there were interest. phaneuf needs to be dialed in to the idea that he plays defense to, not scattered disorganized winger with no speed. wouldn't prefer to gut the group, but the group as a whole definitely needs to improve. i think gunnar could be appealing in a package deal.. really depends on what's out there at the end of the day.

I think you and I would see a lot of each other and so would our teams, in the SCF's.
- Unholy_Forward

I'd like to think so.

Although 3-5 years from now I might saying, thank God I never was able to make that trade!

That is the softest defense I have ever heard of.

Plus Gunnar and Dion are excellent partners. Liles and Gardiner will be together so Liles can mentor Gardiner better. Schenn and Franson seem to be our 5-6.

I still think that's overpayment and I wouldn't do it. I'd seek other options. We are basically giving up on Scrivens and Reimer's develop for the next 5 years putting Luongo in the net and than when he's ready to retire and our team is supposedly ready to compete, we are without a goalie.
- Sheppy99

I don't think that Kadri will materialize for us.

I think that Scrivens will be an excellent backup for the next 2-3 years, with 20-25 games a year in order to keep his development on track. We can trade him once his value becomes high at that point.

In the meantime, we could probably get something for Reimer:

Perhaps we could do:

yeah, we are definitely on the same page.

i would part with the macarthur, kulemin, types all day in a deal for the right tender. i'd part with gunnar before franson to. we can afford to part with some d'amigo type prospects to. i'm not parting with gardiner for pretty much anything, and i still hold schenn close to the same boat.

the right combination, along with some draft picks that aren't first rounders, can probably become quite appealing to some teams. waiting is feasable.. but if we can make smart moves when opportunity presents itself, and maintain the group of higher end youngsters, and keep drafting in the first round, the team is heading in the right direction.

- joel878

I agree, I would give up pretty much all of who you said with maybe the exception of Gunnerson, he isn't tough but is a good puck moving defensemen and isn't too bad defensively. Franson just irritates me with how soft he is in our zone and the kinda size he has.

I would be the happiest guy in the world if Burke brought in a Halak caliber goalie instead of Luongo so I could stop listening to Nuck fans tell us how we gotta give up something good to get him

Hell I'd even take Martin Biron, the guy has given nothing but quality net minding for his entire career even though he hasn't been in a lot of games. I could take that risk. That's a band aid solution I can swallow

he had a poor season last year, he's been up and down pretty much since we drafted him.

Although I think Ron Wilsons system and the way he handled Schenn really made Schenn look bad, I would like to see how he does in a more defensive-minded Carlyle now.. I'd imagine he would flourish under Hitchcock, Tippet, Trotz

I can't put Scrivens ahead of Reimer yet. Reimer is a little younger and he has proven he can do it at the NHL level when healthy. Scrivy has proven he can dominate the AHL and that's great but the AHL is no NHL. Reimer had a bad year because of a concussion and even a veteran like Miller looked awful after his.

I like Reimer more still and would hold onto him. I still believe he can return to form when he is finally healthy.

well.. in all fairness. i think luongo will get more than the komisarek + coffee that everyone is saying he'll go for. gillis is no dummy. which just adds to the list of reasons i think the leafs need to stay the (frank) away from that disaster.

hope if we end up with any kind of stop gap.. it's harding. probably the best option out there that won't require assets given away. but at some point, this middle tier cluster the leafs are developing will have to be turned into something. depth is great, but it can be used for something more beneficial in a rebuild. if we wait, i'm happy with biron to.. as long as he can handle 40+ games, after sitting for a couple years behind lundqvist.
