I guess what I'm saying is, if you want to make Vanek for Coyle the center piece of a deal like that, I'm all for it. However, instead of merely moving up 4 spots in a weak draft, I'd rather get another cheaper roster player. - buffalofan19
If getting into the top 4 is what they want, #7 plus one of our other 3 early picks might give you a better shot to jump up there.
Side note some have Samuelsson going as early as 18 now. |

IMO, a guy like Stastny is just what this team needs. Especially if it rids me of Roy. I know Roys stats are better, but Stastny has size, grit and leadership that Roy does not.
Again IMO, Stastny would excel on a line with Van and Pommer. Van wouldnt have to be the big body in front of the net guy either anymore, and would finally be able tyo use his skill.
The core needs to be broken further, and this is the perfect trade to do so, IMO. The price is not too steep (as it would be for others) and it leave us room still to make other moves. IE using draft picks. |

Personally, I would do it Vanek for Coyle straight up. We could just as easily get the same guy at 12 as we could get at 7 in the draft this year. It's just the way this draft class is, so you're right, the draft spot is a moot point.
I think the reason I could see this as a possibility is because it gives Minnesota a player that can contribute now, it makes us a younger team (which is the direction they seem to be moving in), and it frees up cap space for us to make other moves if they want. Seems like a win-win for me. Plus, we're not even taking their top prospect, because they consider that Granlund. - HonkFortheGoose
I don't think they would though. |

No GM in the league would trade Vanek for Coyle straight up, given the choice. |

Knowing how Darcy Regier operates, if a trade is going to happen, it will most likely be for someone none of us are talking about. He seems to be the master of "where the hell did that come from?". The Hodgson trade is just the most recent example. - buffalofan19
true. that's why i keep mentioning i want bobby ryan + ott/doan because i want to keep that channel open on the off chance i'm right. also i think they'd be really fun in sabres uniforms. |

That's fair, but I was reacting to the original trade proposal, that had a bunch of draft picks moving around as well. If either team feels that Vanek for Coyle alone isn't a fair trade, and it does take more to get it done, the focus should be on landing some immediate help as well. They're not in a position for an effective rebuild. |

I'm sure they wouldn't. Regier wouldn't trade Vanek for Kopitar and Brown. |

I agree. I'm totally on board with trading Vanek for Coyle. The team needs to move in a new direction. It also sends a message to the rest of the room and the the league that they aren't afraid to make changes either. - HonkFortheGoose
I am tired of "the potential the guy has" I want players that have proven can play in the NHL. Coyle has done nothing of the sort. |

Multiple outlets seem to be implying that the Sabres aren't really looking to move up in the draft. Granted, Darcy Regier has always kept things close to the vest, but I'm guessing where there's smoke there's fire. |

that's the thing though, if you get a guy before he blossoms then you pay less and if you get a guy during his prime or after his prime you pay way more. if i had my way i'd say malkin or bobby ryan or bust but i'm not going to get my way on that one. |

Do we know that was actually on the table? That sounds like something LA would turn down before even Darcy Regier would.
If it was true, Darcy Regier should be getting more credit than Dean Lombardi for the Kings' Stanley Cup in 2012. |

Homer said that they don't feel it's worth it to move up in this years draft. It's not strong enough. But, who knows how entirely accurate his info is. Not saying it's not, but also not saying it is.
I can understand why they would feel that way though looking at the draft. Too many question marks. |

Agreed, I just cant begin to think LA offered that. I know it has been reported by a reliable source here, but i still can't rap my head around it. |

No way to know for sure. Homer said it. I hardly think that at this point Regier is gonna come out and say, "Yeah, I nixed it. They wanted to do it and I said no" even if that is what happened. |

How many times have we heard this guy has the potential to be an all star. How may times have we seen players get traded for top prospects that turn out to be just average players. I'm getting tired of the potential and want the all star.
Win now mode, not win future mode. Trading Vanek for a prospect is a step backwards, and may not move forwards in the future. |

Honestly, I do think it's better if we don't actually know for sure. Because if it did get confirmed as true, how would you really feel then? I know the possibility of it happening has frustrated me. If it was the truth for sure, I might have to go jump off the Falls or something. |

I feel like the likes of Bucky Gleason would be all over this one (see the supposed deal Chris Drury had in place) if it were the case. I also think that there might have been more "what might have happened" speculation on the LA side of things as well. |

Maybe. I'm not sure and I'm too lazy to go back and look for it. But, at the time, they wouldnt' have had Carter and Richards, so I don't see them moving Kopitar and not getting a center back in return. |
