going to try to wrap up all those responses in this reply....
Garth: why shouldn't we. I get he gets blamed for UFA failures, but Garth wasn't the reason it was constantly made a punchline in then 90s. Reputation tarnished, stepped on, and put on fire by the owner debacles, Milbury and years of suckage while trading away futures.
Even if you didn't like him getting GM job, which was messy... look at what he inherited and who he has to work with. No prospects. Team sucked. Even trying to build out, lack of homegrown talent was the reason they were failing to press on further. So I agree when the team fell apart under Nolan/Garth and they went towards a rebuild.
UFA offers: He made top offers and many to prime targets each year. I know Botta has said differently. He is wrong...and has been wrong on a lot of items. I have argued this and cited those who have more talent than botta, myself and isles bloggers put together, who have repeated my take on this as well.
Venue situation matters. Long Islands fiscal situation matters. Fact team hasn't contended for playoffs matters. Reputation and history matters as well.
If we then assess rebuild we have to look at how long rebuilds take and compare:
Penguins took 5 years, had two generational players in Crosby and Malkin land there, and also had prospects. Say what you will but Tavares not a generational player.
So being at year 4 when Garth announced he would rebuild (2008 season and started with 2008 draft)... I think more time is warranted.

Great another Grabner that is all we need - kasperrko
A slick offensive forward who can shoot as well as pass the puck. Has great wheels and hands. Plays a gritty game.

yes they do. My talk with Corey Pronman he cited it was one of the most efficient scouting systems he's seen. They have their scouts, part time bird dog scouts, chief scout, system and Garth. Their system is actually very robust and very deep in assessing these prospects.

Heard this before, there has been no progress. The one positive is we have more "prospects" most of which I feel aren't half as good as they are being sold to the fan base which is the norm for most clubs. They have to start showing some progress to warrant the term "rebuild". If anything they went backwards this year. Keeping Capuano as coach is inexcusable, I find it hard that Snow either wants to win or knows how with moves/non-moves like this. |

well he still must get to cap floor. I know he had a poop fit on August 1st because his blowup caused a panic on Isles. They all feared they would not spend and lose players eventually. Garth snapped into action and tied Tavares into longterm contract which was very smart.
however, I do think he's calmed down. They will not spend, prob still to cap floor or near cap floor. BUT if the venue solves itself and they are winning... then will spend willingly.
Spending doesn't mean they won't look to get some UFAs. The good thing on a rebuild is that a lot of that young core not that expensive. So Charles forced to spend.

Fair Enough, but Issue is unless PAP asking for the Moon & Stars why not give him fair market value and keep him? If they are throwing big contracts around to UFA's why be so cheap with guys who actually want to stay here?

I agree plus its coming from Dave Maloney, so its not like its coming from an expert or anything - Vukota
Dave Maloney is an Islander hating asshat that never got over the famous Ken Morrow OT game. Ef him. I can't stand that guy. Him and Milbury are the biggest d'bags affiliated with the NHL. At least Milbury can be funny sometimes. |
