If I knew that would be what it takes to land Justin Schultz, I'd absolutely go for it.

The Oilers would have to draft a forward with the pick, though. Klefbom will be an Oiler in 2013/2014. Gardiner and J. Schultz would be two roster spots. Nick Schultz, Jeff Petry and Ladislav Smid would be the other three. Oil would also have Musil, Marincin, Fedun, Gernat and Davidson all in the system. We'd be stacked.

- Maxbone

And that is the deal killer for Burke right there. He knows Gardiner is his ace up his sleeve when it comes to hopefully landing Schultz.

If he flips Gardiner and the 5th the trade turns into Gardiner (Grigorenko/Rielly,Reinhart/Forsberg) Schultz for Yakupov.

Massive over payment for a guy who won't save Burkes ass from getting canned this season.

+ Gomez? This will be a large boon for Mtl.

If we can get rid of Gomez in any way possible that would be huge for us!

What is with Leaf fans thinking that Gardner and Shultz are a package deal sure they are friends but does that guarantee that Shultz has is heart set on only playing in T.O. no one knows. So Why does every one feel the need to state it as fact? I wonder why people say T.O. is the center of the universe.

I can't wait until John Tavares contract expires since he is good friends with Sam Gagner it is pretty much a lock that he signs in Edmonton to play with his good buddy Sammy G.

It was a response into Clouts insinuating that if they get Gardiner that Edmontons chance of signing Schultz drastically increase.

No one said its a done deal but when both guys came out in Feb and said they would some say like to play together again and then just a mere month later he all of a sudden has a change of heart and informs the ducks wants to test the FA waters, people started to put two and two together.

And with Boudreau coming out last week and claiming he thinks "someone has
gotten to him" and changed his mind after telling the coach he was fully commited to the Ducks in Decemeber it adds a little more substance to the rumor.

At this point its pure speculation but you have to admit there is quite a coincidence regarding the matter.

So if this is truly the case the trade would essentially end up being Gardiner, Schultz (by default) and one of Rielly, Reinhart, Grigorenko or Forsberg for Yakupov.

The Yakupov roast with Stauffer was a little curious today. Usually when Stuffer brings stuff up, it's along the lines of what the braintrust is thinking. There's a good chance they still take Nail, but I have my doubts. Before the deadline, he claimed Petry was playing well enough to possibly replace Gilbert and went from running Hemsky out of of town, to endorsing a possible extension. Gilbert then gets traded, Petry takes his spot, Hemsky gets signed. Maybe he's more of a puppet than we think, and maybe the "five guys at the top" comments from MacGregor holds some truth. Ick.

A calm and patient man I generally am
I'm starting to lose patience with this BS. Our management is clown shoes. If we don't have a coach by the draft I'll kill someone. (pilgor)

What are you going to do to him? How are you going to kill him? As we will not have a coach by then...

Chill!
Wow.
I have often said over the course of the last few weeks that I think Yakupov is the guy!
Today I said my head says Yakupov, my gut says Murray.
I love high-end offensive talent.
There is no denying that Yakupov is the most dynamic offensive player available player in the draft.
As mentioned numerous times on the show the numbers suggest you take elite forwards over defence at the high end of the draft.
Case in point, take a look at the success ratio of all of the 12 OHL forwards selected in the top three spots in the NHL Draft over the last decade.
They all (Rick Nash, Eric Staal, Nathan Horton, Bobby Ryan, Jordan Staal, Patrick Kane, Steven Stamkos, John Taveres, Matt Duchene, Taylor Hall, Tyler Seguin and Gabriel Landeskog) have proven to excellent picks.
I fully expect that YAK would step in just like everyone of those other guys did (with the exception of Ryan) and contribute offensively right away.
But, there are some other things that merit consideration.
It is not fear-mongering but rather reality that there is a degree of unpredictability with the new-CBA and any form of working agreement with the Russian Ice Hockey Federation.
I personally think the KHL is a bit of joke, but I am told by agents and scouts not to dismiss it's relevance in the future.
Yakupov and for that matter, Grigorenko score big points with me for coming over and playing Junior in the CHL. To me they are far superior prospects than say three other top 5 overall drafted Russians in (Svitov, Chistov and Zherdev).
YAK however is not on the dominant level of say Ovi, Malkin or Kovalchuk.
The beauty in Edmonton is he could share in carrying the offence with RNH, Hall and Eberle.
All of that said you can make a compelling case that Murray warrants consideration.
He is mature, natural leader, who by all reports looks like a 10-year NHL pro on the ice.
Murray out-played at least a couple NHL defenceman at the Worlds on Team Canada.
He averages .53 ppg in the WHL in the regular season, but is at a PPG in the play-offs over three years.
He virtually carried a poor Everett team to the play-offs this season once he came back from a high-ankle sprain, and I am told when his team looked down-in-out (down 3-0) in Game 4 of an over-matched series against Tri-Cities-he WILLED the Silvertips back to force OT.
I am tantalized by YAK and the possibilities offensively up front, but you have to wonder if Murray "might" be a better fit, with the Oilers emerging core.

- saskoil21

I probably don't do it. I don't think Gardiner becomes much more than a top 4 guy and I don't think the player at 5 will be a top pairing guy or top line guy.

I do think at 1 you are more than likely getting a top line player and I don't trade quality for quantity.
