Schultz is a talented kid, but expectations need to be tempered. He basically is limited to a 2 year deal for around $900K, and hasn't played professional hockey yet. I'd worry about pople expecting him to step in and be Erik Karlsson
- Jsaquella

I want him bc he's young could come cheap and would fit well on the third pairing. Also helps that he is a RH shot. Flyers also don't have to trade any of their young core of forwards. Maybe they should wait it out one more year until Timonen comes off the books.

Well we know that ain't gonna happen. However is he that good where he can step in and knock a Gust or Bourdon out of the lineup?
- JoeRussomanno

He has a higher ceiling than both, as for being able to take their spot...From what I read, yeah. But what I have seen has been limited and highlights.

The biggest need is the current group of players, from forwards on back, to play better team defense. Without that, Shea Weber, Ryan Suter, whoever, is only going to have a limited effect on the situation. They would help, certainly, but the rest of the team has to step it up and play better.

I mean, who was the Devils' stud defenseman? Bryce Salvador?

- Jsaquella

I believe a lot of the forwards were so young after beating the Pens, I just don't think they understood how hard the journey would continue to be. As you mentioned previously, a lot of these guys are below 25, I'm sure they thought once they knocked out the cup favorite no other team could pose a serious threat. The Debs just punched their time cards and outworked the forwards.

For me, it's pretty much Weber or bust as far as trading young assets. I don't see the need to sign Wideman if they want to resign Carle, am I missing something besides him being right handed?

Well, Schultz's price tag will be $925K per year for two years. That's set in stone. I just worry they'd sign him and expect a top 4 guy out of the gate.

The other option is to start the year with what is on hand, and make a trade, in season, when they have the full use of LTIR and waivers to shed cap hits.

Here is one that has the Flyers going with Belleville Bulls goalie Malcom Subban

Surprising they would have them selecting a goalie.

If they can re-sign Carle for $4.25mm, as Dustin Leed has suggested, I'd love to add a Barrett Jackman and see what the Gus, Bourdon and other kids can do as the 6th/7th guy and look for a trade in season.

I thought under the circumstances Bourdon had a very good year. Only 22 and played 16 minutes a game. Certainly he made mistakes, which most young d-men will do, but I thought he was pretty strong on his skates. I think he could eventually be a solid 2nd pairing d-man in a few years. It will be interesting to see if the Flyers show patience with him, or want to ship him out as quick as possible. I think his game is similiar to Seidenberg, not as good, but I think there still is room for a decent amount of improvement.

I just think he's worth going after. Young defenseman are hard to get that are NHL ready and if he struggles they didn't overspend which won't hurt them if they want to add another defenseman during the season. I just really like his upside and he can start as a third pairing player.

According to a well-placed source, Suter has a potential list of clubs he would be willing to talk to even if his rights were traded before July 1. Suter is represented by Neil Sheehy.

Alas, the Flyers are not one of them.

In fact, the source said, all of Suter's preferred destinations, should he leave the Predators, are in the Western Conference — not the East. Detroit is generally conceded to be his top choice.

ok continue with schultz talk.... just remember every team is going to be offering him the same amount of money, only thing different is the bonuses... so if the flyers want him they better give him something other teams wont... plus other teams have his friends on them... i dont think the flyers do...

Keep in mind that with the Flyers using LTIR, they will not be able to bank Cap space.

So it's bad news that the Flyers can't overpay Ryan Suter? Not sure if you're trying to troll, but generally, you should troll about something that would hurt a fanbase or get them upset.

Not getting the chance to make Ryan Suter the next Paul Martin is great news for the Flyers

No, but the get in season flexibility, plus Timonen's deal ending gives them tagging space, if the same rules are in place in that regard

Using LTIR you don't have in season flexibility. Once that space isn't used, it's gone.

Using Pronger's hit on LTIR will clear some space. Losing Walker's cap hit in the minors creates space. If Timonen is out for an extended period to start the year, they could have some degree of flexibility.

I understand the ramifications.

Timonen would only give them temporary space. When your using LTIR, you can't bank Cap space. Chances are the Flyers are going to be right up against it with little flexibility due to using LTIR.

I'm aware that it's temporary space, but it allows for some degree of flexibility. Not saying they'll have buckets to spend, just some wiggle room.

What happened to the infected toe that was holding him back from the surgery? Now he doesn't need surgery? The Flyers are terrible at reporting injuries. Good news that JvR is healthy.

van Riemsdyk said that the foot is still infected, my guess is that he got a second opinion on the hip and it was decided that rest and rehab would correct the issue without surgical action being taken.

I believe JVR's hip will be operated on right after Grossmann's gets out of the operating room for his knee.
