He was an RFA, not a UFA.

Either way he's not a good fit. I do agree with you that the Flyers really need to consider adding a right handed defenseman (possible two).

Weber is a RH shot. I think the Flyers are ready to give up lots for him

That would be a mistake, IMO.

Many people may not like this move but I think they make a serious run at Wideman. Not sure he will be worth what he gets on the open market however.

I'm interested in hearing opinions on what he will get. 4-5M?

There is almost nothing I wouldn't give up for Weber. I would even think about doing a Giroux for Weber swap.

A special forward, for a special defenseman.

Maybe...depends on the package. If JVR, Schenn, a prospect like Cousins, and 2 1sts is all it takes. I do it. If they want to put Cooter in there for Schenn....no thanks.

If Weber comes I would hope the Flyers resign Carle as well and try and trade Mez somewhere for a young top 9 forward or 1st rounder back

I said this yesterday but Giroux is the only player I wouldn't trade. Everyone else would be available. Its a long shot to land Weber but its worth making an offer imo.

I wouldn't give up major assets AND pay him $7.5 million/year

Not worth gutting the team for.

If it were my call, I wouldn't give up Giroux or Couturier. Every other player is negotiable. There is not a single player in the NHL that I would trade for "at all costs" but Weber is pretty close. Legitimate franchise defensemen are the hardest commodity to obtain.

The one reservation I have about a blockbuster deal for Weber is opening up other holes in the process. But those holes are easier ones to fill than a legitimate replacement for Pronger, who will be in his prime for several years to come.

Regarding Bouwmeester, no thanks on that cap hit.

I agree. I would trade JvR, Voracek/Schenn, Cousins and (2) 1st rounds for Weber. I think holding onto Couturier and Giroux is a must. I'm still on the fence about Schenn whether or not I would add him in the deal.

Bouwmeester doesn't seem like a fit imo. If im going to spend that kind of money on a defenseman I want someone who is a legit elite defenseman.

It is. Have to remember your getting Weber in his prime at 27 years old. He is probably the best defenseman in the league. Nashville will be getting ridiculous offers for his services if hes available. Theres also the option of building from what you have. Just add a third pairing defenseman and a 4th line center who can win some faceoffs and help on special teams.

(Pronger at 34 isnt on the level of a 27 year old Weber, imo)

What do you think Wideman will get on the open market?

What would you be willing to part with for Weber? And does he being a RFA in a year make him less valuable for trade? Thanks Bill, I appreciate you chiming in once and a while.

The devils nor the kings had a Pronger caliber defenseman and they did ok. Wouldn't want to break the bank for weber. If deal can be made within reason, then good. But if not, then I think well be fine going other routes.

But we had to sign an aging Pronger to a lifetime contract we can't get out of, which balanced it out, IMO.

Doughty is one of the better defenseman in this league, imo of course.

The Devils on the other hand didnt have a stud.
