You get what you pay for in this case. Ott may not be free, but he's one of the best in the league at what he does... calling him a 3rd liner doesn't do him justice. The guy is a top-level checking line center. You give him 2nd line minutes, no problem, and feel good about it... not to mention he sees time on the powerplay. Granted, Dallas wasn't a great team this year, but he's still a guy who could provide valuable leadership to a young group of Leafs.... Basically, Mike Peca pt.2
- Schenn-Sational!

agreed about everything except for the Peca part. Overrated.
if giving up a 5-6 plug d-man like franson is all we have to give up for Ott then sign me up

Ideally, Galy... but he'll probably be gone, along with Forsberg... and Burke won't take Grigorenko, so likely one of Murray or Dumba.
- Schenn-Sational!

Murray isn't falling to 5th and Dumba is just an idiotic pick at 5th considering how bad they need a center. If he won't take Grigorenko, that only leaves Faksa.

he didn't even bring him in for an interview... go look up how many RSL/KHLers or QMJHLers he's drafted in his career.
- Schenn-Sational!

doesnt matter what hes done in the past... grig is up there in rankings... burke made a point of saying hes gonna pick best available...also considering if hes at 5 the best available would also happen to be the position we need

You mean the guy who's got the potential to be a 2nd line winger?

THAT'LL SOLVE OUR TOP LINE CENTER NEEDS! Take the highest-valued guy, in this case, someone like Dumba, and trade him later, or let him make another asset available. Don't draft off the board just cuz the guy's a forwards who *might* be able to play center.

Ott would just become the next colby armstrong, always hurt, never effective. Moving on.

Current NHL-level d-group:

Phaneuf-Liles
Gardiner-Gunnarson
Komi-Schenn
Franson

Holzer is considered NHL-ready, and can easily replace Komi or Franson.
Gysbers, while not a high-end prospect could also fill in a lower defensive pairing
Rosehill, while he played forward last year, is a natural d-man, and could also play the #6 role in a pinch

Blacker and Percy are likely marlie-bound, but could surprise

And lets not forget, UFA... Leafs could use a veteran d-man to help stabalize their
group of youngsters, and there are a lot in this UFA class to be had.

- Schenn-Sational!

Blacker is already there and Percy isn't eligible for the a yet

They have to eat Lombardi's contract because they acquired Franson so yeah, they better treat him like an asset.
- Unholy_Goalie

that wasn't the question
do you think franson is an asset?
personally i don't think much of him at all. other than having a above average shot im not seeing anything to get excited about.

You're right. Past actions aren't an indication of future ones.

Just because Grigs is ranked high by some (20th by others) doesn't mean that Burke and his staff rank him that high as well.

I think Franson's value is right where Carlo Collaicovo's value was right when we dumped him in a trade for Stempniak. I rather Carlyle get a preseason with him before giving him up for Colby Armstrong 2.0.

First of all, he can and does center and secondly, he's a big, physical, two-way player. So yeah, he's kind of exactly what they need.

Don't draft Dumba because he "might" be as stupid as Phaneuf.

Hey, stupid Phaneuf did great to start, maybe Dumba will do great and we can peddle him for multiple top 5 picks!

They passed on Connolly and Fowler for Nino, and Couturier and Hamilton for Strome.

JT was fine.

But trading up for DeHaan? taking Bailey? bleh.

Phaneuf came into the league when the game on the PP was through the roof. It helped him score a lot of goals and put up a lot of points. I doubt Dumba gets the same kind of luck where he becomes insanely valuable for being a one-way player.
