That's the thing, in the end he's the one who made the decision.

My family comes from ville St-Pierre, the Habs even contacted them to try to convince Martin Lapointe to come over. They gave the guy a royal treatment to convince him and he still turned them down....

And he's supposed to help explain to our young players how important it is to play for the Canadiens?

- Scabeh

shows you how far the franchise has fallen. if this was a competitive, stable team, yeah, it's worth it for a guy like Lapointe to come. but he didn't want to have to sit there night in and night out and be the Franco voice as to why this team sucks.

As a player you make the decision that is the best oppurtunity for your career.

Am I the only one a little pissed off that Martin Lapointe, after turning down the Habs as a player for 500 000$ more from Boston gets to have a job in Montreal now?
- Scabeh

What (frank)ing idiot turns down half an extra million dollars?

How about staying in detroit where you were considered an important part of a stanley cup winning team?

He went for the money.

He'll them to work their ass off so they don't have to play for a team like the 2000-2001 Canadiens until they're 27.

Maybe it was for the money, but the money isn't the only reason why a player wouldn't have gone to Montreal in 2000.

And don't forget the Canadian dollar was worth $0.70US at the time.

They told him he'd be the #2 center behind Koivu. I would have done the same (frank)ing thing.

very good point.

Lapointe is in a position to help the club now far more than he ever was as a player.

Gainey told him that. I don't remember if it was Gainey or Brière who told that to the journalists, but I'm 100% sure it has been said and confirmed.

Obviously not just the money, he wanted a new challenge, playing second or third fiddle is not always the best chance to further your career.
