Kronwall, quincey and white are 3 descent d men if they get one or two in the off season
plus they have a few days to resign Doug Janik - homiedclown
Decent isn't good enough when your goalie is Howard. He's not terrible, but he's not going to be their savior night in and night out. Detroit's system thrives on puck possession and they don't have the D men to do that right now. Not when the guy who's been the rock for the past 20 years isn't there anymore. There's going to be a bit of a "learning curve" per say. The beginning of the year is going to be a struggle. |

His veteran presence is the part they'll miss. They currently only have 5 Dmen under contract for next year.
Kronwall
Ericsson
White
Kindl
Smith
And Quincey is an RFA. That D is definitely in need of a bit of work, IMO. Though, they do have the space to go out and sign Suter if they want. - HonkFortheGoose
Im sure Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronwall, Franzen, Filppula, and Bertuzzi will help make up for that.
Losing Lidstrom is huge, but Holland is one of a handful of GM's who can and probably will figure out how to replace that void. |

It would not surprise me if they signed Rozsival on the cheap to shore up the back end and land Suter
but I have been drinking since 10 am

I don't know that Kronwall is suited for that type of role. He also tends to have injury issues. |

I know that makes sense on paper but until I see at least 4 months of futility from the Red Wings, I still have them pencilled into a playoff spot and as a cup contender.
Edit: + Alllllll that cap space. |

I had more than one team person say to me, " someone is destined to pay way too much for Stoll.". Hard to argue with that. His value has never been higher.. This is a player who could have been had several times over the past few years if you were willing to take on that cap hit. Buffalo, Minnesota, Nashville and Phoenix are teams I have heard over the past month - Ek

Losing a Dman like Lidstrom isn't going to be easy to recover from. I see everyone's point about it being Detroit and everything, but I just really don't see them starting off the season all that great. Even if they get Suter. There's going to be a period of time before the new pieces will gel with each other. I just think the main thing that's going to happen in all of this is that Howard ends up exposed as just an average goalie. |

I like the way he plays, but I don't like the price tag he's going to bring with him, so I'm ok with crossing him off the list. |

Must be nice. If Terry would have had more patience coming in we could have made some sick moves. Think of all the big names that have been avail since Terry took over.
Anyhow I'm confident he'll get it right. Its time we end the pomp and circumstance of the begining of the Pegula-era and the loathing of the Post Briere/Drury era and get back to winning hockey that we can be proud of. |

If Leino got 60 points last year instead of 25 points, it would have been a great off season

Roy will be traded this year. Writing is on the wall. IMO I dont hate Roy, I dont think he is the root of the problem or anything, but he isn't good enough to be a legit #1 Center on a cup team, but he isn't bad enough to push down to 3rd line either. We just need someone different. And a new coach. |

haven't got there yet this season...
did blog this...taken from hockey's future 2005, a look back at "la core" and how they were perceived at the time in the sabres top-twenty prospects:
#3 Derek Roy-- "...his performance in camp was not quite good enough to help him secure that roster spot. Roy’s mediocre preseason performance, combined with his sometimes lackadaisical play in Rochester during the 2004-05 season no doubt has the Sabres concerned that the talented center is resting on past laurels."

Parise has a knack to be a force in games that matter. His season this year was so-so. But he'd be a great addition to any team. Just not sure that he's what we need, nor is his salary going to be easy to cope with. |
